Why?
Europeans dominate this race.
Maybe Tollefson can tell us why he DNFs every year.
Where’s Jamil Coury?
Rob Krar?
That arrogant Joe Gray? He claims to be so great.
Where’s Zach Miller?
The Nike Trail team ??
Where’s Anton?
Booo!!!!

Americans would do a lot better in this race if they took it seriously. By that I mean living in the Alps for half the year and skipping the western states and its associated golden ticket races.
Imagine thinking soccer sucks compared to mountain hiking 😂😂😂
I believe it's that whole pacing thing. American ultrarunners are not used to run without pacers. Some exceptions like Karl Meltzer, but he didn't do well there either.
Unfamiliar country, different language and a huge time zone differences. And on top of it a certain arrogance which isn't helpful as well.

No American in the top 10 yet with the men.
Courtney is in front.
utmb is a cultural event requiring centuries of civilisation.
since you dont understand football, you almost certainly have no understanding of cricket, and therefore utmb will always be beyond your grasp.
if even the french confuse you, all is lost.
but good luck to courtney - 1st place so far. impressive.

That doesn't explain why American women do so much better.
courtney coming up to 6th maybe overall

Not that it's an excuse, but Big Jim really, really struggles on the cold.
That being said, I think the fact he's been beaten so many times in France means he will put everything into it, in 2022.
I'd like to see him give Western States a miss to focus on France, but I'll trust the big man in whatever he decides.

Courtney Dauwalter is 7th overall right now.
The US women always did well at UMTB. 6 wins so far.

I woke up this morning thinking - what does UTMB even prove? Nighttime, no sleep, over mountains. I think the ideal race is either the OCC or the CCC. The UTMB is just something different. Walmsley would need to live over there for 2 months before the race and simply spend time in the mountains, but it may not be for his DNA.
Walmsley could do that, but he would need to NOT run Western States at all.
That's the problem of the US runners. They have to put too much priority on US races for their sponsors.
Courtney Dauwalter moved up to 6th place overall!
US women seem to do ok. The men dont need to skip western states to do well at utmb. I mean francois just did hardrock for crying out loud and is leading utmb. Also all of these guys are used to the cold. Jim goes and trains in the San Juans in the summer after western states. It gets cold there. Also they have to carry jackets. I would imagine the problem is likely a combination of factors. Most likely would be the late start, running during the night, and the much more competitive nature of utmb leading to faster starting paces. Also, sometimes you just dont have it. Running ia hard after 12 hours and it is easy to stop when you know you have to go another 12 hours.

proving my point.
Have you even been within 3000 miles of Mont Blanc?
Normally, this time of year, i would be seeing it all day (provided sunny of course!)
