Just barely got over the flu, the plan was 2 miles up, 4-5 miles steady state, and 2 miles down. Came through my first mile in 7:34 with my HR already at 173. Normally I would be at 130-135 bpm at this point. I’d expect a first mile HR of 173 coming from a low 5:00 effort. I Cancelled my tempo work and just did 4 miles averaging 7:23 per mile. My avg HR came out to 174, which is normally gonna be 5:20ish pace for a 4 mile tempo. Is it normal to see this kind of spike in heart rate? My breathing stayed how it normally would during easy miles but I got super sweaty and just didn’t feel great. I’ve got a bit more than 2 weeks before racing 8k, so any insight or advice would be appreciated.
