Last summer I had a bout of severe gastrointestinal symptoms, a fever, sweats, almost passed out a couple of times. I was sure I had COVID but tested negative. I think now it was probably salmonella.
I contracted Salmonella one time when I was staying with friends on a business trip. We ate at a burrito truck (not kidding) and it hit me at about 2AM? I eventually had my friend drop me off at the hospital because I could not sit on the toilet and I was worried I was dying. It was awful. Being in someone else's house made it even worse because there was a level of me knowing I was disgusting and totally ruining their night (work night, nonetheless).
OP, if it went away after the vomiting, I think it is probably food poisoning of some kind. Probably not Salmonella, but something else. You can get food poisoning from a lot of things. It doesn't have to be weird food. Could be a salad that had the wrong bacteria on it, etc.
