Well it's almost here - the big dance! Who you got? Let's try to keep this clean and on point. I'll start,
Men's
Of course it's all about the big three:
1) Francois - 3-time champion, generally regarded as the current boss of big mountain 💯's, what else is there to say? My only comment is nobody, not anyone, non, nada, nyet, has ever won Hardrock and UTMB in the same year. And he didn't just win HR, he blew the doors off the old course record. Will he be recovered enough?
2) Big Jim - yeah he owns Western States and most other "faster-terrain" ultras, but has yet to prove himself in a big mountain 💯. We all remember the epic 2017 showdown and how that ended. On the upside he's got that experience now, he won WS this year but didn't necessarily go all out for records like previous years, and seems to have allowed himself better recovery this time around. Can he finally deliver?
3) Xavier - also 3-time champion, doesn't quite seem to have the top end of the other two, but is a cagey local who's got this course absolutely dialed. He makes no mistakes here, and if you want to beat him, you better not either. Will he be ready to deliver again?
4) Everyone else - who might surprise us?
Women's
OK it's time to fess up and admit I don't know near enough about the ladies field, so educate me. My only comments:
1) Courtney - defending champion (2019), absolute sweetheart, represents all that is good in the ultra world. Not sure how anyone else could be considered the favorite. Except... can she hold up? There was that meltdown in last year's Colorado Trail FKT attempt, and then again in HR last month. I surely hope there are no serious health issues and she'll be back on form ready to roll...
2) Everyone else - who are they, who's hot, who's ready to trot?
