C'mon Bekele! Please no DNF! I still believe.
Wow, that makes me feel good about him.
Is NYC a fast course historically? Surely Bekele knows he doesnt have too many rounds left in the chamber this late in his career. He had to have picked NYC for a reason.
Usually not super fast since there are some hills/bridges, but Meb ran 2:09 there, which was a PB at the time. The record is 2:05 from 10 years ago.
Wow then I wonder if he still thinks he can attain the WR or how this can fit into the plan to reach that goal.
I would have imagined that at this stage hed only sign up for races where he thinks he can take a shot at the WR. Maybe Im wrong.
Wow, that’s a quick turn around. Must be a big payday, or he’s visiting a friend in NY….you know, why not just run and see the sights?
I would travel to NYC just to see him fly by me for 5 seconds. But a DNF/DNS would kiss me off. quite a gamble.
Already planned his second marathon for when he dnfs Berlin.
I kid.
Berlin he is running for the wr. NYC he is running for fun/for the paycheck. He can probably win and possibly set a course record with less than a full effort for him.

Isn't 2:05 in NY comparable to like 2:03 in Berlin? The course record won't be easy. I remember Desisa after Doha trying to run also NY.. he made it to the 10km mark and dropped out.
Love it.
Now, Centro should race at least 4/5 of the upcoming circuit.

Yeah the NY course has to be worth two minutes easy. Adjusting for super shoes, Mutai's effort was 2:01 equivalent. He was in unreal shape

I hate how the media and the casuals are so ignorant and have so much recency bias that they say Kipchoge is arguably or outright the GOAT of distance.
Hes the goat of the marathon, not of distance. He's not even in the running for that title. It's between Bekele and Haile.
Bekele finishing both these races would be a bigger surprise than Marcel Jacobs winning Olympic gold. Good for him though, he's taking in those appearance fees while he still has a few good years left
That was such a great article. Thanks for posting it!
- Bekele made the case of himself being the greatest runner (compared to Kipchoge) and he is asolutely right. The head to head, the XC titles, the tracks titles put him well above Kipchoge who has only really shined in the marathon
- He is injuree free and preparing well which bode for a good showing. We did not hear anything last time before the London marathon where he pulled out days before the race.
- He is schedulded to take part in two marathons close from each other so his preparations must be really good and he has confidence in his abilities. It's not a guaranteed that he will be able to perform well right after Berlin but the belief is the first thing he needs.

SI has been reading the John Wesley Harding threads and buying into them!
Bill Rodgers and Yuki approve of this plan.
It's not like he's doubling up the same weekend.
Hopefully this doesn’t mean he’s not in shape for Berlin and just going for New York
Can Bekele overtake Kipchoge as marathon GOAT if he takes WR and then becomes the first to win ALL SIX marathon majors? Discus.
