From this view, considering how easily she won and how much attention she got, it’s our of the blue for me.
I honestly never heard of her before.
I may not be tuned in at all events at the college and junior level, but I am more than a casual fan of the sport.
Yeah, SCR didn’t come out of nowhere. She was NCAA champion as a freshman and I believe set a new NCAA record in the 100. Then she immediately signed with Nike and went pro. She’s been a well known star in the sport for 2-3 years.
Lol. I remember when Bolt won in Beijing '08 and American media, which knows nothing about T&F reported the following "WR 100m runner comes from nowhere! Jamaicans come out of nowhere!"
Uh...
Bolt before Beijing:
WR for 200m 15 and under
WR for 200m 17 and under
2004 Olympian at 17-18 y.o.
2005 WC Final: Was leading on the backstretch when he had to pull up w/ injury
Had run various 19.7s, 19.8s before turning 20
WR for 100m (9.72)
Jamaican Sprinters:
Herb McKinley: Oly silver
Neil De Grasse Tyson's Dad: Awesome athlete, would've been Olympian if not for WWII
Ben Johnson (immigrant to Canada): Oly silver, Oly champ (for a minute)
Linford Christie (immigrant to G.B.): Oly Champ
Donovan Bailey (immigrant to Canada): Oly champ
Sanya Richards Ross (immigrant to U.S.): world leader in 400 going into Beijing Oly
Merlene Ottey: Lots of silver, lots of bronze
