This thread has morphed into something crazy. CU just lined up 3 distance olympians one a very recent grad of the program who is way out kicking his coverage. The fact the MW changed since RWTB is a sign that he is good at his job, his teams results IMO are more of a recruiting failure. There was a quote in the book where he pints out how many "Gouchers" Stanford has and he wrestles with the idea of just recruiting in state. This is after he pulled in Slattery and Elmo from NJ the past two years, and before he pulled in Torre's and Ritz. I think he should revert back to getting the 9:10-9:30 CO Men and build them up like he did in the book. A quick glance at their current mens roster I only see 5 runners from CO. While I understand you need a "Goucher" the strength on his early programs was built on guys like Reese and Batliner in the book...also the entire world of distance running is exponentially better, I remember winning dual meets running away from the pack in 10:20-30, I doubt that makes most varsity 5's in HS anymore.
