he coached barrazza from scratch to sub 4 and to become a olympic trials qualifer and now we're saying the guy can't coach??
Barraza wasn't from "scratch" at all. He was a very good athlete in high school, one of the best in Texas. He was 5th in the state in XC and the 3200 (Texas is an extremely competitive state). 4:13 and 9:05 off of very low mileage, in hot temperatures. Every coach in the state knew he was going to be really good. For the record, his best times were from his 5th year so it wasn't your standard 4 years.
It was solid development for Barraza but by every metric he was the exception at Houston, not the rule. Magness really struggled to develop anyone.

So to answer this … I was being recruited by houston this season for the 800m as a transfer athlete. Magness was extremely nice guy but his communication with recruiting was HORRIBLE. Got told they wanted me and would offer me scholarship on the first phone call. Couldn’t get in contact with Magness for 3-4 weeks after multiple times trying to reach him. Finally one day he randomly texted me and said hey sorry I missed your call ….hahah… long story shot I committed anyways despite the red flags because I’m from Texas and have always dreamed of running for houston and Magness seemed to be liked by his athletes. That is until mid summer when he notified us he would be stepping down to focus on personal life , and no he wasn’t kicked off actually was begged to stay. When he left I decided to decommit and transfer elsewhere. So in short great guy, horrible at communication and recruiting, but was alloted a decent amount of money for distance guys based on what they offered me.

You guys need to read more of Magness’ stuff. This isn’t subtext, this is just the kind of thing Steve puts out all the time.
