I want to be volunteer assisting after this year (when I wrap up a grad program and my remaining eligibility), and I want to obtain some certifications to help my land as good of a position as possible. The two that I definitely plan on getting are my USATF Level 1 and first aid/CPR/AED. What else would give me a leg up? Thanks in advance!
Knowing someone, like the head coach. Figured I'd say it before someone else does...
Best advice here. Going into a volunteer role doesn't really require any certifications, heck even getting a full time job doesn't. But, I think it is still a valuable thing to have to help you learn about other events, as well as learn about other training methodologies and the why's instead of just knowing what your coach has made you do.
Start reaching out to coaches, asking questions...talk to both your coach, and your head coach, if your high school coach has a relationship with any college coaches, let him know. The more people that know your name and know you're looking, the better.
As far as other certifications, look into some of the Altis.world certifications in the event area you're looking to get into.
