In what ended up really just being a 400m race, Murphy thought he could give everybody a 10m head start.
It was Seb Coe-esque Moscow 800.
Why be at the back in a slow pace race?

1. Murphy has been flat since his massive win at USA's. Whatever they did mentally and physically was not good.
2. Terrible tactics from most of the field. You don't give a guy with 44.2 room to kick. At least one of them should've done a Webb-style burst with 350m to go.
Terrible race but congrats to Korir for smashing it.
A full form Brazier would've won this one.
This really is Y’all’s king.
All the posting on YouTube
All the “tune up” races in Europe
All the overhype about getting 3 Americans in the final
All this was bs. I get why people love the hype of Clayton but he’s just another 1:43 guy. (Gotta run it twice). I just don’t buy his stories of not running at the trials. Man peaked for the trials and get lit up in the final today. He’s a great athlete. Much better than I’ll ever be more than likely but damn it’s hard to watch someone with this skill set get his doors blown off in a race that suits him.

Nah, his tactics are the reason he finished DFL. His usual thing running people down in the final 120m only works when people are coming back to you and rigging up. That's not going to happen when the leaders go out in 53s.

We got the answer to a question that was posed after the his semifinal? "Clayton Murphy: Tactical genius or just lucky"?
Tactical buffoon. Placed himself dead last when they went out at 54. Of course he will never catch the leaders. I don't even know if he wasn' good enough. He probably wasn't but never gave himself a chance.
There's nothing sillier than runners who try to be smart by being "tactical." Get out near the lead and then if you have the most left at the end, you can win. End of story.
Error in line 1: object not found. did you mean USA == trash?

Yep, I knew he was in trouble as soon as they went into the second lap and he was in last, with the slow opening pace. He not only had to run faster than everyone else since he was in the back, but also had to run a longer distance going wide around the whole field. His push from 600-700 meters wasn't bad, but having gone wide around the curve, it didn't really get him anywhere. Then he was wiped out for the home stretch, physically and mentally.
I think with better tactics he could have snuck in for 4th today, but I'm not sure he had the legs for top 3.

Going out dead last, 15m back from the lead at 400m off a slow pace is a shameful effort
That was Dobek who went out in dead last (same haircut). He ended up with the bronze.

Nope. Dobek was tied for 4th with Korir, while Murphy was in last place.
I'm not sure what he was thinking.
Great season but a slow race you need to be up there.
Also not sure what Amos was thinking. 53 and I don't like his chances.

Exactly what I was about to post.
It was like he was thinking it was a 1500 the first lap. And then the bell rang.

The difference being that Coe was still good enough to pass almost everyone.
He finished last in Doha as well, didn't he (in a completely different style race)?
Has any other runner finished last in two major finals, let alone two consecutive finals?
I lost him in the race when they went through the bell. About 450 in I saw he was in the back and was confused. I thought I missed some big move. It’s like they swallowed him up and spit him out. Lots of pushing to sit in the back? Weird race.

🤨
You mean like Rogers? The bronze medalist that was 20 meters back with 200 to go?

Where’d the brits finish in the men’s 800 today?

I agree, I think this was more of a factor than his tactics. Even in the first lap, he didn't look like he had it.
Dobek seems like the future here. Unbelievable tactical chops.
