TBH I think part of the attention EC's gotten is because she's blonde.
It's also the case the the US has had a dearth of WC/OG track winners who were not of the brown persuasion.
Whether that's how things *should* be is a different question, but I think that's how things *are*.

Come on, harsh to suggest Coburn didn't try her best. She clearly tried but tied up for whatever reason, whether humidity or something else bothering her. Eurosport coverage showed her fall - first steeple on the last lap - she looked gassed and stepped on the steeple to jump and fell on landing, fell over the rail infield.
Trolls trolling. But it's the LRC boards......they fake pearl clutch when a Brit swears on TV. Just stirring a shallow pot and responding to their own posts.
Sad.

She said her body shut down halfway through. She wouldn't be the first American who has been caught out by conditions in Tokyo. The lack of a holding camp has really hurt some athletes
Stop with the excuses. OMG, no camp, how horrible!
Everyone knew the Olympics were being held in Tokyo for the past 5 years, plenty of time to plan time in heat and humidity. That is no excuse.
Planning for it and running in it are two different things. I expect every athlete planned for it and trained for but bodies work differently - some adapt better, just like how some people adapt better to altitude. Its simple variations in physiology.
The distance events at these games are basically a contest of who acclimated the best. Evidently conditions in Tokyo are similar to Uganda.
It was over for her at 1800m when Frerichs blew her doors off.
It does not hurt Coburn that she is beautiful. She also has a pretty nice personality and has been consistently great (at least by American standards) for a very long time.

Everyone in Oregon's "system" is off following the Shelby bust.
I’m proud of Coburn. Didn’t quit. She’s awesome.
Caps off to frerichs. Well-deserved medal.
I agree. It doesn't hurt that she is pretty, well spoken, seems nice, gets along well with teammates and can back it up with performance. But everyone has a time to shine and on an international stage her star seems to be fading. She had a great career at CU and as a pro. And she helped put womens steeplechase on the map. Maybe she will coach with her husband?
But Frerich is the current steeplechase queen!
And Val beat Emma as well. She did good for her first international experience.

I think part of it is that USATF props her up (because she's pretty and marketable) and then the expectations from everyone are very high and then when people see her fail so badly it doesn't sit well. I think when it got hard for Emma in the middle of the race and Courtney and others were pulling away she realized it was over and just kinda mentally shut down. This has happened to me many times and almost everyone at one point or another but it's tough when it happens on this stage. I do feel for her because today was a failure but I do hope that Courtney gets the credit and shine she deserves because she is often in Emma's shadow. Emma is a champion and her consistency has been remarkable but today was not her day.

CF is also blonde, so not certain why EC would get more attention for being blonde.
To be honest, EC has gotten very little attention relative to many other female US track athletes. The ones getting the most attention on the track has been Allison Felix, followed by by McGlaughlin/Mohammed and Mu. Athletes who win get attention.

Frerichs trains in Oregon with BTC and Coburn in Colorado with her husband.
Wow.
Can't believe how quickly some fans have turned on EC! One of the USA's most consistent athletes who is sharkbait as soon as they have an off day.
Also can't believe that some people seem unable to contextualise. This from Women's Runner:
"In December 2019, her mom, Annie Coburn, was diagnosed with stage-four colon cancer, news that rocked her tight-knit family."
I suspect this whole backdrop is likely to have had a significant impact on EC today, as well as it just not being her day.
Cut her some slack.
I told ALL OF YOU that she did not look good in her qualifying heat. You all jumped on me. Guess I was right. She couldn't handle a miniscule change of pace in the heats and she couldn't handle the change of pace in the final. It was so obvious but you all just took her interview at face value.
El Keniano wrote:
Why again does she get all the attention when Frerichs is the actual American record holder?
Because she's incredibly arrogant. Just watch any interview with her, she constantly talks down her competition and implies they're doping without having the nards to come out and say it explicitly. Ridiculous.

I’m not even a Coburn fan, but this is the only correct response to her race.
She was in medal contention with 800 to go. Ran out of gas with 500 to go (because she clearly went for it). Tripped over the barrier because she was dead. And THEN, even though she was obviously going to be DQ’d, she finished.
Not sure what else you want her to do? Want it more and kick home in a 55? That’s not how this sport works.
