I think the bad sign was that she struggled with the change of pace. They went out in 45, then slowed down to a 66/67. When the pace picked up again she instantly struggled to match the pace change.
I wouldn't count her out: Tseguy looked exhausted in the semis in Doha and grimaced to 4:02 (or something thereabouts) and then dropped a 3:54 for bronze. But if it's not an even race she'll struggle. Still hard to see past a Faith/Hassan 1-2, with Muir, Gebreezibeher, and GDS fighting for bronze - the latter once again seeming to peak at the business end of the season (first time breaking 4 all season and it's in the semis).
Big shoutout to Jess Hull for a fantastic run too.
Agree with this, and also puts the disappointing place finish into context.
Purrier hasn’t raced internationally as much as most of that field. She’s been able to control the pace in U.S. fields for the past two years — even more so since Houlihan’s suspension.
She did not go to Europe after the Trials to test the waters at world class paces. Of course you don’t want to over-bake yourself ahead of the Olympics, or get blown away and lose confidence, but it could be that she’s getting that international experience now.
