Wasn't expecting anything out of them but both were totally out of it. Although you probably had to be sub 14:00 - 14:10 shape to medal

I think they actually ran well. 14:55 at 85 degrees and 90% humidity is worth well faster. Probably not a PR effort for Schweizer but certainly the best 5000 Cranny has ever run all things considered. She can probably go 14:30 low later this year if she chases it in good conditions.
No food trucks in the Olympic village.

So an existential question for nearly all American distance runners....what's the point? If your best is so far off a global medal, and you have no chance of every closing the talent gap, why bother? There are probably easier ways to earn a living.

A) how do you know what you can or cannot do if you don't try?
B) if you qualified for an Olympic event and had the chance to participate, why wouldn't you want that experience?
C) they're getting paid to do what they love. They'll have plenty of time later in life to get "real jobs"
I know you're just baiting but sometimes people prefer to do something they love doing rather than something they feel forced into lol.
They're both easily making 6 figures and will set themselves up well for a career in track afterwards so who cares lol.

Whats the point of you ever running? You can't even run as fast as the girls can.
Interesting to see Schweizer move over in the last 50 meters to not give Cranny anywhere to pass...

Poor effort? And Simone Biles let her team down, right?
I'm sure their effort was the best they could give under the circumstances of adjusting to a huge time zone difference, the whole covid response to the athlete's village, etc. The heat and humidity .....
Great effort.

Ok, my post was sort of obnoxious. They both great for American distance runners, and they can spend their time and lives as they wish and earn a living any way they want. And no, I certainly cannot run as fast as Cranny or Schweizer and never could, but I also did not choose to become a pro and devote my life to running.
They weren't even in the fight for best Non-African. They are good at cool weather time trials in the Pacific Northwest. Throw them in a meet that matters in summer heat and humidity. No answers. None.
Same with the men. Outside of Grant Fisher, the BTC folks totally collapse in the most important race of their careers.

I do think Karissa is not where she was last year. I feel as though last year when she ran 14:26 she would have run 14:45ish in this race. But I think it's unlikely we will see an American woman o. The podium in the 1500 and 10k as well, though Elle could be close with a possible top 5-6. Ethiopia is incredible this year.

I agree. It really does make me wonder if, err, the burrito consumption has gone down since you-know-who 'ate' you-know-what. I suppose Grant (and Moh)'s performances in the 10,000m don't confirm this suspicion, but I still do wonder....

Bowerman is probably under more suspicion after Jerry very obviously lied about never hearing about Deca. If his other athletes were doping like Shelby, they probably stopped for the time being, hence Karissa not being even close to where she was in 2020.

Maybe that's the problem. They spend all their time chasing fast times in ideal conditions instead of getting comfortable running against faster runners in all types of conditions.
