You can’t just make up a fictional guy and some fictional songs for the sake of trolling.
Be better.
Maybe because he seems to straddle genres. He also refused to "sell out" commercially for record companies.
Could also be, at least partially, due to his voracious appetite for drugs!

Steve Earle is really good, and has had notable success!
His lyrics don't touch Van Zandt, Dylan, or Cohen though.
*Honestly I think his son, Justin Townes Earle, had better lyrics too. He was one of the great current American songwriters, RIP.
Because drugs and jail. It's hard to reach the top when your best years were wasted on these two things.
The REAL question is... How in the hell did Joe Bonamassa get so popular? No soul, no groove, no game. He must be related to a recording exec or something.
He's not a 'pop star' for several reasons...some include because he's not magazine cover pretty and his songs aren't terribly catchy.
I don't put a lot of faith in 'pop stars'. But Steve Earle has never done a lot for me either. On paper, I should like him, as I am a huge fan of his two big mentors--Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. But Steve's lyrics don't move me. I appreciate his talent. I have friends that love Steve and I have TRIED to like him. I have even seen him live twice, going in with an open mind. But those shows were monotonous and boring to me. If you are a Steve fan, great.
Final note: Steve gave the 1999 South by Southwest keynote speech while wearing a t shirt that said "I'm from f**king outer space."
I often wonder how Jeff Tweedy became a bigger name than Jay Farrar.
Same reason Emmylou, Gillian Welch, Buddy/Julie, Mark Heard, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin weren't bigger stars. Outlaw Country that leans left of center isn't marketable to the masses.
Add Sturgill in there as well.
He shot himself in the foot with his drug use, political stances, and fights with Nashville execs. But his best songs like Galway Girl and Goodbye will continue to be covered many, many years from now.
