Considering Michael Phelps accounted for 23 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze himself and this is the first Olympics he has not competed in since 2000, the US did very good. Phelps had 41% of our gold medals from 2004 to 2016.
10 of Phelps golds were relays though, so he's not completely responsible.
Good win at the end though, that's the US bellweather event, if they lose the men's medley relay, then the Olympics is officially finished for them.
