It's interesting when a creep like Nassar gets busted you get all of the chest pounding men stating things like "If that were my daughter there would be no need for a trial!" and other tough guy rhetoric. However, the actual survivor of that abuse, who is someone else's daughter is now being disparaged by many of these same macho men. Humans are so strange.

You're on an anonymous forum, you don't have to virtue signal.
I have never heard of a fighter getting the yips. Fighters do back out Of fights regularly they feel an injury is likely to render them ineffective, but I don’t think there is a direct correlate to her situation in MMA.
World Atlas Sports ranks Gymnastics ahead of American Football in rankings of most dangerous sports worldwide.

Yeah. This is like Tom Brady bailing in the middle of a game when his team is losing.
She's one of the all time greats but I think this is a big mark against her in my book and prevents her from achieving legend status.
And of course she's paid tens of millions of dollars a year by some employer, or USAG, or all those huge gymnastics meets around the world that sell out 20K seats a night, right? What an absurd comparison.

Wow, that settles it then.
Biles has competed at the top of her sport for years & has nothing to prove to the LRC armchair quarterbacks who are set in their backwards ways. The only message she is sending is to take mental health serious. There are more important things than winning at sports. The subject has been taboo for so long. I really don't think the old hats understand what it's like to live in America as someone under-30 that never had dirt cheap expenses & realistic expectations (that's obviously layered but don't feel the need to get into it with people who are just saying awful things about her).

Typical millennial whining aside, the science within the field of psychology is pretty clear that avoidance of things that cause stress, anxiety and fear can actually exacerbates those symptoms in the long term. If sport (which is what she indicated in one of her interviews) is causing her stress, then quitting mid-competition could be like throwing gas on the fire. I think her coaches definitely let her down in her time of weakness in this case.
Great points NE,
Perhaps if people like Suzi Favor Hamilton had dealt with her mental issues and demons earlier on, she would not have ended up later as an expensive hooker. Everyone could see she was often not quite right, now quite all there during some races in her career, but no one apparently did enough to help her.

"In the long run" What long run? She's 24 years old. You really think she's cares about the future 4 years from now? At this point, she's done everything that anyone could dream of in her sport. Its not like she's some 16 year old phenom at the start of a career.

That's irrelevant to the point I was making, but if that's the case, then good for her I guess. Must be nice to just quit on your teammates mid-competition because you feel satisfied with your career. Very heroic and stunning and brave stuff.
he played last year with a torn acl. everyone is different, some people tap out under pressure, i have dealt with depression and anxiety all my life. i also played team sports through college. it is not in my dna to let my teammates down. she should have tapped out earlier to allow another athlete to get a chance of making the team.
It's surprising to me because she has been a public figure and dealing with pressure for a long time now. She was one of the faces of the last olympics, has been on tv shows and commercials, wears a leotard with a GOAT on it and now all of a sudden the pressure is too much for her? In the heat of the moment she dumped that pressure on her teammates to perform instead of her. Her teammates weren't even prepared to go and do some events/routines because Biles was supposed to, but they went out and performed. Luckily they weren't too rattled and did very well, props to those women. What if the pressure had suddenly been too much for each of them? They all walk off? I understand this day and ago of mental health, but if she was this bothered as it seems she was, step aside earlier, let another teammate take the 4th spot so everyone has an opportunity to fully be prepared for their routines, and don't surprise them with their teammate, leader, "The GOAT" now just be a glorified cheerleader during the middle of the competition they have been dedicating their whole lives for.
A week before the 1964 Olympic Games, American discus thrower Al Oerter suffered a neck injury and torn cartilage in his ribs.
He competed anyway, won the third of his four consecutive gold medals, and broke the Olympic discus record.
When his doctor questioned his decision Oerter said, "This is the Olympics. You die for them."
That's all I have to say about Simone Biles.
This all could have been avoided if people were not making her out to be heroic for quitting. If she was really having the aerial issues that put her at risk just say that and let's be done with it. She doesn't have to be a hero or a villain, it would be just like an athlete not being able to compete due to injury. But that people have tried to make this out as an act of heroism is ridiculous. That is not true and it sends a bad message.
BTW let's not pretend if Tom Brady had a nagging injury in the superbowl and had a bad first half then decided to hand the second half to the back up the reaction would be the same. Unless Tom Brady's arm was ripped off or hanging limp at his side everyone would be ripping on him for not returning. In fact, I remember a time when Jay Cutler sat for the second half of the NFC championship game with what I believe turned out to be a torn a sprained MCL. Didn't matter, we got Jay Cutler is PU$$y for almost a year.

totally understand where she is coming from and cant imagine the pressure she mustve been under. with that being said...sports psychologists are on every professional team and these athletes have access to the best healthcare available. i sympathize with the millions of americans (and billions around the world) that dont have access to mental health facilities or even healthcare at all.
Sport Psychologists on the teams can help the athletes cope and move through the pressure.
They can also help them make, and cope with the extremely difficult decision to not compete if that is in their best interest and the team's. They help athletes realize that sport isn't an all or nothing proposition.

Is gymnastics the only dangerous sport? I have never seen an MMA fighter just bail at the last minute because the pressure was just too much and it would have been less stressful to just quit, despite all the hard work they, their trainers and teammates put in to get them to that moment. It's a bratty selfish move.
Face it, Biles is weak sauce.

Oliver McCall
Motorsports are much more dangerous than gymnastics. They are doing 100+, some of them on motorcycles, and don't let one bad lap make them quit.

You have to compare her situation to another one where getting the yips can paralyze or kill you. All of these other comparisons miss key aspects of her case.
Or perhaps you are aware of a fighter who got the yips. That would surprise me, but if someone has a link that would be interesting.
The hatred and outrage being expressed towards Biles by the usual suspects is entirely predictable. Earlier today, Charlie Kirk called her a "selfish sociopath." It's one thing to be disappointed that she didn't push through or to think that this removes her from the running as the GOAT gymnast, but these personal attacks are just sick. It's a young woman cracking under pressure that none of you dweebs could handle, either. Chill the f*ck out.
