I'd call it a toss up between this and the 2004 olympic final. Both had the 3 GOATs facing off and finishing top 3 in great races. 2003 was a faster time, but 2004 was higher stakes since it was the olympic final.
Fair point actually, I guess Athens also has the feel good story of El Guerrouj winning in its favour. Nothing against Kipchoge, I love him as much as everyone else but El G finally getting a couple of golds would’ve been special to have seen

Honestly I can’t imagine rooting for El G given clear doping concerns so I will take 2003 any day.

I prefer the 2007-2009 era when Bekele was crapping on everyone.
If that is your prohibitive factor, you might not be rooting for anyone at that level.

Maybe not, but the other two guys seem less obvious.
1976 Olympic final was good too.

Yeah, I love watching the 2008 5,000m. Bekele was just so dominant in that race. lead ~9 laps and no one could touch him

Yes it was the greatest. Greatest marathoner, 5-10K guy, and 1500-5k guy in the same race. All running great, and a fun unexpected upset from Kipchoge.
Bekele's dominance was amazing (putting 5 seconds on Kipchoge in one lap in 2008) but sometimes got a bit boring.
Both the 2007 and 2009 5000s were fun. In 2007 Lagat outkicked Kipchoge, and in 2009 Bekele held of Lagat's kick. But always fun to see the all-time greats go at it and have it be close, particularly when the 10,000/road guys meet the 1500 guys at the 5000.

tbf kipchoge was a 5000 runner through 2008 or so
1976 didn't have some of the best runners in the world with a number of countries boycotting. With the quality of the field affected, I cannot put it anywhere near the best performances ever.
Greatest ever? I'd say that 2nd 5000m in the 10000m was the greatest ever as the field split 12:57.24 to close those final 12.5 laps.
YES!
And then they had to ruin everything by bringing in EPO testing.
So sad.

He was and I think he should've had the world title in 2007 if not for the mental mistake of letting Lagat cut in on him...

Would have been close, but I don't see Kipchoge winning that battle -- if he had anything left to give he wouldn't have let Lagat get a stride on him. Lagat just let up in the last 20 meters (like he always does) when he had it won.
I agree he made a mistake by letting Lagat go by him on and move inside. At 13:42 I see a surge injected by Kipchoge but he has nowhere to go and even puts his arm out. To be clear, it was a savvy move by Lagat to cut in on him and completely legal. Lagat did ease off but he also had a tough last 15 meters in the 2004 Olympic 1500, and I believe in 2009 WC 5K. So I don't think that is necessarily him just bagging it with the race won. Had Kipchoge went wide would he have stolen it? Maybe not. But had he pushed slightly harder to keep Lagat wide and used all his energy the last 20 I'd argue he could've just went by.
