Yes it is still early in the Olympics but after the 1st weekend who is a bigger bust at the Olympics the US Women's soccer team or the Men's basketball team?

The Men
US men triathlete also pretty disappointing
Women 4X100m free team was also pretty bad
Neither until they are officially out.
Highest finish ever for an American in the tri. Not sure that's a disappointment on par with either team that the OP put forward.

The Women's 'soccer' team are still hot favourites to win the gold. Would hold back on calling them failures yet.

They were never going to beat the Aussies though.
The US swimming team in general isn't going to get the million golds that they usually get mind you. Will be damaging for the overall medal table.
Doesn't really matter. As long as they get they message across.
The women won 6-1 yesterday and will handle Australia... you nerds didn’t realize that Sweden beats or ties the US team quite a bit and is one of the four or five teams that cause them problems. They will be fine.
The basketball team had one of their toughest tests early too. Doubt they drop another game as well.
They'd have to fail a lot more to come close to being as bad as US men in the marathon. Aside from Rupp (with his special 'help'), who has the US produced who has been a factor globally.? The US lags behind nations a lot smaller. Pretty sad. US Women's soccer is still one of the best in the world, and US Mens Basketball loses for obvious reasons, but they could still win any competition on their day. Name the year when a US man might win a major marathon any time soon? I'll wait.

The USWST is showing it is on the right trajectory to become the USMST. Eventually they'll occupy the position in the world rankings they deserve. The men basketball team should not "could still win any competition on their day". Both teams have access to facilities resources and support no other team they face will ever have access to. Both teams are based on the same meat grinder system to produce talent lets say the kenian marathon system is based on . The only difference is the dominance showed. Can you say the same about US running? The OP post has lots of merit. Yours not so much.

For a brief period (2007-2008), Ryan Hall was relevant globally and Boston 2011 was a flashback to the expectations he created. After 2008, the East Africans went to another level.
I noticed you did not mention when a US man might win a major marathon in spite of the fact that the US is one of the world's richest countries and athletes here have access to all sorts of coaching and training advantages not available to athletes from developing countries.
I notice you lack comprehension. I'll spell it for you. Without a large participation rate and a highly competitive domestic environment the talent necessary to Excell will not be identified and pushed to achieve said results. Conditions that exist for women soccer and men basketball in the USA with the aggravated surpluses of resources being thrown at them.
USWNT is and will be the bigger failure. Thus far they look like a shadow of their WC team and I predict the Netherlands will send them home tomorrow. While the men's basketball team has not been scintillating much of that can be attributed to lack of playing time together. As the tournament goes on they will play better. They still might not win gold, but we'll see improved play from them.
“Bust” wouldn’t be the term I would use at this point but I feel better about the women’s soccer team’s chances than the men’s BB team’s .

Still no names. Lots of excuses for crappy US marathoners, but no names. Not one hope in spite of all the resources available to them. A lot easier to crap on the athletes who are actually out there with a chance to win something for the country than to acknowledge that some of them have no shot in hell. But let me know if you think of someone who might win a marathon medal in the next 10 years.

I don' think any US male triathlete was considered a medal contender. Seems like McDowell finished right about where he "should" finish.
The end result is all that matters. If they rally and win gold, all is forgotten. If they both fail to win gold, we can evaluate after that. The latter would not be surprising. If you go (fake) woke, you will be a loser. It ain't rocket science.

In order to have a meaningful conversation and help you develop some grade of comprehension I'll put the ball in your court.
Please post the revenues or net worth for the starting five on the court at the Olympics ?
Please post the revenues or net worth of the starting eleven on the pitch?
Also please post the revenues and or net worth of the men toeing the line at the start of the marathon for the USA?
That should give you an easy starting point for the reason why no marathon runner from the us should be expected to win.
Not crapping on anyone. Just pointing out that the hype surrounding the WSNT should be brought down a notch since the unfair advantage they shared in the past is running out.
The fact basketball is almost a religion for most in the USA and a team of the most talented struggled because of lack of chemistry but in reality was out coached and out played justify the poor performance of US marathoning ten fold.
