Don't think Thompson was suppose to drop that early with Amos. They also went out a little bit too hard however Centro didn't know any of the plan according to commentary. I think if he had better pacing, he could have either gotten it or ran 3:47.
There is no doubt the pacing was poor - under 55 seconds is not the way Centro is going to fulfill his max potential - I even think going out in 57.0/1.54.xx would be a lot better for him. Honestly I was surprised that two very 1500m guys in Bartelsmeyer and Thompson could not get to 1000m/1200m at a pace that should very manageable for them. It was kind of pathetic tbh.
That being said I am still in amazement at how much criticism Centro is getting. Was he ever going to run a 3.46 mile? Really? There is a reason there are only 3.46.xx or faster has only ever been run 17 times in the history of mankind (this includes the multiples by El G, Morceli and Aouita who are the only 3 to do it multiple times). It's f-ing hard! Coe, Scott, Ovett, Lagat and even a mega-juiced Kiprop couldn't do it in packed European stadiums with $$$ on the line and we really thought Centro was going to do it as Jesuit High School on a Saturday night? What I am saying also puts Webbs performance into context with respect to how good it was - but Centro and Webb are very different people and very different athletes.
If Centro had broken even 3.48 he would have been just the 12th guy since the year 2000 to do it. This is with 19 editions of the Prefontaine mile, and 20 of the Emsley Carr mile and Dream miles (I'm omitting 2020) since the turn of the century.
3.49 low is REALLY good and even better with garbage pacemaking. I think he would have even just been better off with wavelight and I do believe he could have run a second faster with it there, somewhere in the 3.48.0-3.48.2 range which again with all things considering, in essentially a training run TT, would have been absolutely epic.
I'm not a massive Centro fan by any means but I sure as f--k respect his accomplishments and ability and his effort on Saturday was so much better than so many people are giving him credit for.

Centro is a competitor. He's not going to run his fastest if he doesn't have anybody to pass in the final 400. It's hard for any athlete to tap in to that without actual competition. No one to blame here
Are your rose-colored glasses prescription strength or did you get them over the counter?

Centro's 440y splits were 54.61, 57.43, 59.19 and 58.03, far from ideal pacing for optimal mile time. From this, Stat Gangsta predicts an ideally paced time of 3:46.67. I think he had the AR in him, he just didn't have the best pacing
Where are you getting these splits? Unless the on-screen clock is wrong, Centro can be seen going through 440y in ~55.7 which is nowhere near the numbers being thrown around here. Go to 27:45 in the video and tell me he’s splitting 54-mid.

Thanks. I still can’t make sense of the on-screen clock. It matches up with his other splits but the first 440 is way off.

Disregard. He goes through 409m in 55.7. I’m an idiot.
