That we cannot have an honest discussion about the vaccine is why there is so much hesitancy. A lot of people want to pretend there is 0 risk and you are a bad person for even discussing it. We have some bad history surrounding vaccines as recently as this century with anthrax vaccines for soldiers. If we had an honest discussion I think a lot more people who are on the fence would decide the risk of the vaccine is much less than the risk of Covid and would get vaccinated. For kids and younger adults this discussion definately makes sense.
I agree with this sentiment. If you tell people "everything is fine, here is what you have to believe, there are no issues with the XYZ, you are not allowed to discuss it, just take it", I don't think it leads to more people taking it.
Especially since during covid so much of expert opinion has changed course.
Even take the J&J vaccine. When it was approved it didn't mean it was perfectly safe. It meant the experts thought it was better to take it than not. Then there were some serious concerns and they paused it to re-examine They then came back and said "it's still worth taking." Should people not have been allowed to discuss any of this along the way?
Telling people what they can believe or discuss does not get us to a better place.
If we're not allowed to discuss whether a young , super fit athlete, who already had Covid should not take the vaccine
when in 2 major countries (England and Germany) they have not told 17 year olds to take it, then something is wrong.
People aren't as dumb as you make them out too be. Old people are like 90% vaccinated in the US. It's because they can easily think about the tradeoffs of serious covid vs the vaccine. Young people, the calculus is not as clear cut, but saying you can't even talk about this does not lead to more people taking it. I think it could lead to probably more people not taking it.
Scenario 1: Take this pill. It's good for you, it's safe, and will protect you, you're not allowed to question me.
Person who would take pill has heard stories of people having reactions to pill and others who have taken pill still dying from what it will protect them from
Vs
Scenario 2: We strongly suggest you take this pill. Yes there are some complications with it, but they are usually mild... and the benefits to it way outweigh the potential side effects.
Person to take pill: "Yes I heard of someone who ended in the hospital because of it."
Doctor: "Yes, but that is extremely rare. At your age (and explain the facts)"
I think Scenario 2 leads to more people taking the pill
