So I know someone who is in kind of an interesting situation and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to help this person. So the scenario is this: This guy runs high school track and is by far the best distance runner and the only truly decent distance runner. He runs 15's in cross country while the second best runs 19's. As well he lives in an area where there isn't any good competition around for at least 2 and a half hours away by car. So basically every track meet he is told he has to run every single race and he's basically burned out by the end of the meet and therefore cannot run any decent times. On top of that he has to run 3 meets every single week because the sprint coaches want the points so they can have an undefeated season. Sometimes he goes to races on his own on the weekend where there is actual competition so he can actually try to get a good time knocked out. Well anyways now the spring coaches have told him he can't do that anymore because he has to go to other races on the weekend that are local where he will be running every single race once again and will be way too burned out by the end to run anything remotely fast but will still probably win since there is barely any competition. He voiced his complaints but he was told that he had to be a team player which doesn't really sound right considering he is literally doing all the work, a team shouldn't require the same person every time to make the big sacrifices. He's also not the best 800 runner and doesn't even focus on that race but since he did place second in an 800 meter run one time the sprint coaches have told the distance coach that this athlete needs to start working on training for the 800 rather than the 1600 and 3200 which is what colleges are trying to recruit him for. There was another incident where on one of those weekend meets it was in a location where some of the best runners in the state were at and he wanted to go up against them and hopefully churn out a good 1600 meter time. Well the 4X1600 meter relay was literally the race right before the seeded 1600 meter race and the sprint coaches told the distance coach that he had to run the leadoff on the 4X1600 meter relay and then run the seeded 1600 meter race literally 20 minutes later. Their logic was "if he gets a good lead then that should motivate the next 3 guys to hold it", well after the first leg the team was in the lead by the end of the race they were next to last (the other 3 guys lost the lead), then he of course didn't run a very good 1600 meter time in the seeded 1600 and the top guys in the state were well ahead of him, anyways the next day at practice the sprint coach yelled at him for "embarrassing the team." Then going into regionals the teams 4X800 meter time was 8:55 which is pathetic yet the spring coaches said that they were going to enter the 4X800 meter relay at regionals and the team was very far away from the qualifying mark, they ended up lying on the entry time yet told him the team got into the race with the 8:55 entry time (clearly trying to manipulate him into running the race yet the team hadn't qualified and was likely to place dead last).
Anyways how should this guy handle it? Should he quit? Should he continue taking one for the team? I'm just curious on your thoughts on this matter.
