Big schools getting ready to break way, soon it will be only the top 40 teams in their own league.

I'm not a big sports guy and just as a casual observer but even I can see the Big 12 is mismanaged but OU and Texas bailing out isn't going to make their lives better. Uber-douche-bro elite football schools like OU and Texas deserve each other and the SEC. The SEC made moves long ago that made them an elite, money, football powerhouse. Emphasis should be on "long ago". In life there is a false sense of permanence. Things are going up, we think they will always go up. Things are going down, we think they are always going to go down. In both cases: they don't. Back in the day it seemed like the Dallas Cowboys would win forever. Back in the day the Chicago Bulls would never lose. The rise and fall of the SEC has not yet been realized and it will fall some day and we will wonder how the geniuses and Texas and OU timed things so that they only caught the fall.
Q: How many OU fans does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 4. One to change the bulb and 3 to stand around and talk about how brightly the old bulb shined.
Q: What does an OU fan and an Oklahoma State fan have in common?
A; Neither of them went to OU.
The SEC is number one because of its rabid fan base. Football overall might decline but the SEC will always be #1 in college football.
Your joke about OU vs OSU fans accidentally stumbled upon the truth. The very large majority of SEC fans did not go to the schools. The schools represent their state which is why Oklahoma and Texas would be good fits.
And the new NIL rules will only make the SEC stronger. You can now go to a top SEC school and become a millionaire as a freshman.

Yeah, while a pretty funny joke it's dated. "College" football is hardly about college, they are just minor league teams and people pick and chose which one to pull for many reasons. Some are regional, some are out of spite, some are simply because you liked a player from there as a kid.. whatever.
It has very very little to do with actual college attendance, heck at most small schools you will see students wearing gear from the big schools. It's because they don't think of them as a university, they think of them as semi pro sports because that is what they are.

My take is this is all about NIL. Whether someone is for or against NIL doesn't matter. It's here and will change the entire face of college athletics.. This move by Texas and OU is just the beginning. And this will have far reaching effects.
I am not sure how minor sports (probably all sports ) will be able to survive at schools who aren't in the Big Boy school conference.
While this entire event doesn't seem like it has anything to do with XC & T&F, I'm afraid it doesn't look promising.
This, plus some recent comments by Mark Emmert makes you wonder. IAfew years back there was discussion about a new association. It would be made of 4 - 16 team conferences. Basically the P5 would separate off. Thus in some sports conference championships would be the first round round of the playoffs. TV would be drawn to those 4 conference. Many schools will be on the outside looking in.
