I think I'm going to step into it on this one, but no reason to post this anonymously. I think one of the best things about LetsRun is we allow open debate.
Robert's article on Cole Hocker has spurred a lot of debate.
I'm just more surprised by the certainty of everyone on this issue than rather seeing the world with a little nuance.
Science is about asking questions, testing things, looking at data, and drawing informed conclusions. I'm totally fine with people concluding that the best scientific opinion is Cole should be vaccinated and then people then deciding when the best window for that to occur.
An elite athlete may have different considerations than a normal joe.
The last year has showed us that the expert opinion or even consensus if you will can be wrong so I'm totally fine with people asking questions and debating. I think we get to a better place than just saying "no debate allowed" or acting like something is certain when it is the best informed opinion.
Intern Karl is a top NCAA athlete and got the vaccine during the season but I can easily see why Cole didn't.
My question isn't directly related to Cole but more about the age of people getting vaccines. In the Hocker thread, a strong opinion is "Everyone needs to get vaccinated ASAP." But that clearly isn't the opinion in the UK and Germany.
Both countries have not recommended that healthy kids under the age of 18 get vaccinated. So "science" isn't clear cut on this issue right? What am I missing?
Our scientists have concluded it's best to get vaccinated if you're young, their scientists have not. But I don't think that makes anyone who is 17 in the US and not vaccinated an idiot. You could easily extend this to a 19 year old athlete who has had covid if I want to make it more related to Cole.
What am I missing?

Just as in the US when the CDC director said people who were vaccinated didn't need to where masks, the science didn't radically change. She made what was her best informed decision. I'm sure some people saying Cole has to be vaxxed didn't like her decision. My main point is there is more grey than people want to admit.
