Women's Olympic softball has been watchable because pace of play is quick., unlike Major League Baseball, which has become unwatchable.
After watching the US/Canada game yesterday I have to agree. 7 innings is the right length and the pace of everything is just faster. They even have a rule about using a designated runner for the catcher so they can get equipment on between innings. Relief pitchers only get a handful of warm ups from the circle. It is a good model.
As a former "Softball Dad" and a huge baseball fan, softball is a great sport to watch at the upper levels based on the pace of play.
One reason for the fast pace is that baserunners cannot take a lead (i.e., they have to keep a foot on the bag) until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand. This elininates pitchers looking over before every pitch to keep the runner close to the bag as well as pick off attempts/throw overs. In addition, there are less baserunners in general because of the smaller field (and sometimes dominant pitching like last night.)
College softball is the only sport that gets better ratings for women than the men's version (college baseball). I would not be surprised if this remains true for the Olympics.
I'm an usher for a Low-A minor-league team. It's not just the majors that drag on and on. But hey, more pay for me!
OUTSTANDING QUALITY and brisk pace of play in Olympic Women's Softball.
I enjoyed every game I watched.
Congrats to all 6 teams.
Major League Baseball SUCKS !
