This will cement him as the Olympic gold medal favorite, as I've been saying all along.

Will he have wavelight?
I'm rooting for him, I like bold moves like this.
If he does in fact get the record, he will not medal. No way he maintains that level, or that level of focus.

Lolwut? Track athletes are so mentally and physically weak they can’t put in 3 good efforts in a season?

No, but guys at the back end of their career only have so many bullets left. I'm guessing he knows that, but he already has an Olympic Gold so why not go for the record while the iron is hot.
If he runs 3:46-3:47, yes I’d think Jakob would be concerned. He came into 2019 as the clear no. 2 and finished 4th - the more guys in 3:29-3:30 shape with championship pedigree the tougher it looks for him. Tim is still head-and-shoulders the best and probably won’t care much.
If he bombs then what?
🔥🔥🔥👀
Risky move with only 3 names listed.
Are you guy's insane? Are you a bunch pansies? This is amazing. We always complain about today's pro's not racing enough...not having balls...not putting it on the line.
This is what we want. Holy hell, I feel like everyone is complaining like little b*tches.
Let him go for it. And this won't affect the Olympics. It will probably help.

I would say he’s got more than “nothing” to lose, Are Tim or Jakob gonna suddenly be scared if he runs 3:48? I suppose if he actually gets the AR it would mean something, but I don’t see him doing that now. His best bet is to keep his cards close to the vest and be more of a mystery heading into Tokyo.
I’m also old-school in my belief at focusing one thing at time. We are 10 days out from the Games, don’t be experimenting with Jerry-certified time trials
You do NOT think like a champion. Who gives a damn what Tim and Jakob think? Do they have an Olympic gold? There is a vast chasm between the mindset of champions and some of you timid souls.

+1.
If he's in shape, why not do it? I don't see any of the downsides mentioned previously. If he gets the AR, he's in the history books. If he runs 3:47-3:50ish, it was a good pre-Olympic tune up.

You are actually a reasonably smart poster, but we can agree to disagree on this. I actually at first thought you were trolling. Having said that, he is a really savvy racer and he can indeed medal. I would be a bit surprised if it was gold.
This thread is full of ridiculously bad takes.
We have people crapping all over Centro (despite his record in championship race) because he hasn’t laid down a Monaco TT type result. He now decides to do this before the trials (with plenty of time to recover) and everyone is giving him crap because he should be “keeping his cards close to the vest” or “he only has so many bullets to fire at his age”. Which is it?
WTF is wrong with you all. I’m not even that big of a Centro fan and I hope he breaks the record and gets a medal. Why? Because I want to see American distance running succeed and it’s fun to watch people run fast.
HOT TAKE:
Centro splits 880 with 1:51 then brings it home with 1:50.... 3:41.XX WORLD RECORD!!!
55-55-55-54!!!

“Yawn.”
Another Jerry/BTC time trial. This is doing nothing. Centro is a racer and damn good one at that. He’s not a TT guy. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt though and give him a 3:49 high. Solid enough for a PB but well outside the AR.
I agree that this may not play well with his Tokyo performance. I hate TTs before big championship races/rounds. They seem to almost always backfire.
7 athletes have run 3:30.xx or better in 2021.
If he gets the record he'll be in the medal conversation.
Alan
An American record attempt which is like a dream come true to be able to watch and half the replies are b*thing about the purpose of going for a record while you're in shape and accusing him of doping lol. This sport must be so sad for all you that assume everyone is dirty. Who cares, LFG Centro.
