So many people are conflating great acting with box office revenue.
Keanu? Ha! The guy has one mode.
Harrison Ford never acts, he is just Harrison Ford.
Cruise has some range.
I would go with Bill Nighy.

I’d vote for Harrison Ford- the Jones and Star Wars franchises have cleared 100s of millions if not billions
Samuel l Jackson
Die Hard movies
Star Wars movies

Jurassic Park movies

Pulp fiction movies
Marvel Comic movies
Ironman movies
Many others
He was in one or two of some of those so not sure you can give him credit. Heck I think he begged to be in Star Wars. The franchises are not built around him either.

Lawrence Olivier?
Peter O'Toole?
Tom Hanks?
Brando?
Bogart?
Jimmy Stewart?
Hanks and Stewart had great range.
Bogart could be funny at times. If you get a chance to watch "We're No Angels" you get to see the comedic side.
I would add Cary Grant in there as well. Again, range from drama to comedy. In fact on thinking on it, he is first on my list.

Bruce Lee. He kicked Kareem’s a$$, for crying out loud.
Jackie Chan runner up.
In a Jackie Chan movie, Kareem would end up dangling upside down with his head in a bucket of paint, or something.
The later Kung Fu movies are better because they're less pretentious. The viewer knows Bruce couldn't really kick a whole crowd of people in the head one at a time and win. You have to ham it up a little, make it funny.
1) Steve McQueen
every action movie male lead doesn't measure up
a. merchant marines
b. perris island/ became an actual marine
c. saved lives of (5) fellow marines during a training exercise
d. served on marine honor guard
e. professional motorcycle racer

i. Looked, acted, and behaved like a man. This is probably the most important part. And unlike John Wayne /similar, he wasn't pretending
Anyone who prioritizes acting highly would rank Washington above S&S.
Look who's posting under a new name.
1. Clint Eastwood
2. Harrison Ford
3. Sean Connery
4. Sean Penn
5. Tom Cruise
Brad Pitt is highly underrated here, I think he cracks the top 5.
- Troy
- Inglorious Basterds
- Snatch
- Mr and Mrs Smith
- Fury
- World War Z
- Se7en
- Ocean's series (this might be a stretch as an "action" series though)
Steven Seagal was also pretty sweet in the Out for Justice era.
ANYBODY SEEN RICHIE? ANYONE KNOW WHY RICHIE DID BOBBY LUPO???
Action never required great acting. If it did Sly wins for Rambo and the 'nothing is over' speech.
But Seagal before he became a meme was good value
Toshiro Mifune
Steve McQueen
Steve McQueen
Another young boomer for Steve McQueen
John Wayne does not make list. He only did two movies. One as a cowboy, the other as a general. They were released under a bunch of different titles for marketing purposes, but only two movies were actually made.
Buster Keaton.
Uh Fight Club

Whaaaat? say whaaaat?
Are we choosing best actor, as in acting abilities? or best action movie star?
The answer is either Ahhhnuld, or Stallone, that's it. I'd put the Austrian Oak slightly ahead of Stallone only as Predator is the best action movie ever made, but Stallone is the better actor and also writes and directs pretty good too.
Arnold swazzysomething
Stallone
Cruise
/end of list.
Audie Murphy
Not only did he have a 20-year acting career in western and war movies, he received the Medal of Honor for valor at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition.
