Collegiate athletes can now make money off of road races or no?
Simple answer….yes. Have been able to for at least the last 6 years. Must be less than their running related expenses for the year.
I don't believe the rules regarding compensation directly related to athletics and performance have changed. What they can do is accept pay outside of the athletics, even if it is related to their athletic ability.
Race winnings beyond expenses, probably still a no go.
Money as a brand ambassador for a running company, that's all good. You can be compensated for commercials, social media posts, you tube videos even if they are related to your athletic ability. Could not do that before.
I think grey area that need to be clarified is shoe and apparel sponsorships and the like. Can a shoe company financially support a runner in exchange for wearing their shoes in competition? What about sun glasses? Uniforms have to match, but athletes do not need to be in matching footwear (at least by NCAA rules).
