If a high school of 1000 boys trained seriously to break 5, how many would do it?

How long do they have? All the same grade? Or different grades?
420
Let's say they have to do it by junior year. They start as freshmen and all also do cross country.

Now that's just plain stupid! 😂
I went to HS with 650 male students, roughly.
My senior year, we had at least 7 who could run under 5. Maybe more, but I can think of 7 for sure.
So about 1% of the school.
Now there were other good athletes who never did distance. If you took people from the football, basketball and soccer teams, you could probably find at least 20 who could run sub 5 if they were involved in running year round.
If everyone in my HS had to train to reach sub 5, I think 5-7% could do it. I think 10% is possible but a bit too ambitious.
Realistically, 5% should be able to run under 5 minutes.
1000
There is some truth to this. Running, as a sport, is very reliant on mental toughness. You can achieve a lot more than people think if you just concentrate, believe in yourself, and put in the work.

This is as close to correct as anyone will get. Nice job, Greg.
I would think around 70 percent of non-obese high schoolers are talented enough to break 5 minutes if they're willing to dedicate themselves to training. Counting all the people with obesity or medical issues, you'll probably end up with around 400 people.
I broke 5 after 2 years after I graduated high school. Late bloomer here.
(I don't run the mile though I run the 400 and 800 lol)

No it isn't. Being good at distance running is primarily the result of good genetics. You have to train, but our ceiling is set by those genetics. Can you just believe in yourself and run a world-class time in the 5,000? Nope. Mental toughness is such a tiny part of being good at distance running that it is hardly worth mentioning.

No way. Not anywhere close to that.
We have 700 boys in high school. 13 broke 5 this spring. Many others could but they were running 400/800 and never had the opportunity. A few guys were injured also. So we had about 20 who could have done it that were on the track team. We had 2 girls do it also.

That's probably because they're probably on drugs, like "speed" or "the devil's lettuce" (Shakira Richardson).

Nope! There are legit times that are well beyond what you can ever do, and that has NOTHING to do with your lack of mental toughness.
This topic has been argued to death on these boards almost o the point of becoming a meme. This seems like a troll thread but it got quick replies so I'll give you 4/10
Dude. Every thread I start is serious.
Don't listen to anything Boomerpole says on this topic. Exactly 7% of my high school class broke 5:00 and only a small fraction of the class ran. There were many more good athletes who could have run. If everybody tried hard it would have been no less than 25% and probably more.
