This is what happens when you give incompetent people power over the more competent. Idiotic power games.

I don't understand not sending everyone that qualifies unless they withdraw themselves.
Are there any athletes the USA isn't sending because they are cheap...er, I mean...not good enough despite qualifying?
My bad. I don’t really like name calling but have to accept I’m an idiot.
Apologies
My country used to do this. Clearly they don't now, because a lot of average are making it now.
I lost a photo for second at the trials, had an A qually, a 1.1 win loss against the guy who got picked. I got left on the cutting room floor. The guy who went made the final. We likely had a team for relay that would have medaled.
This stuff happens all the time. Its why I don't lose any sleep for those who try and fail, or who blow it.
This has happened in Canada since at least 1968. Coaches and team chaperones, etc., can go to many Olympic games and not even hit the meter that measures real merit . Yet let an athlete qualify to be in the Olympics due to hard work and dedication to the sport of track and field, it suddenly becomes that merit only counts if that athlete has a high chance to make the final. Imagine the worth to Canada if the athlete competed in the Games, was highly respected for their dedication and continued to pay forward for tens of years later.
But Canada has an inferiority complex; say sorry a lot, But the Olympic Staff are top down and with athletes the young, talented athletes at the top and the rest of us expected to provide competition to the youth. We know we aren't going to win an Olympic gold medal, but we have so much to give in other ways if we ever got to experience the Games.
No wonder so many young athletes in Canada dope to improve their performances so they will get selected. I've ran almost every day from early September 1957 until today when I was unfortunate to read that other countries are still fighting what we were way back when.

If you think this is a problem with Sweden athletics you are mistaken.
This is a problem with the sport of athletics.
Why is the qualification system not the same for all athletes in the sport?
Because every sport is different. The IOC might run the Games, but the international federations set selection procedures with the athlete limit in each sport set by the IOC.

The USOPC has been sending "full teams" for the modern history. News flash: different countries approach things differently.

But they shouldn't. Send everyone that qualifies. Full stop. Bunch of cheapskates.

I am literally looking at this right now. She is 37th. I'm done arguing with you here.

Well similar to being an alcoholic, ownership and acceptance that you are one is the first step in rehab.

Sorry I just had to even find out who Jamile Samuel is because I follow the middle distances quite closely and haven't come across this name before. Turns out she is a Dutch 100/200m runner so you actually have been looking at the 100m rankings and not the 800m rankings while giving your 2 cents worth.
I mean do I need to say any more here?
if they send a team to nairobi world u20 it will cost similar but someone getting 7th there will get like 350x less attention then her 9th in tokyo
Money isn't an issue, the control freaks in these federations just like coming up with arbitrary benchmarks to justify their paychecks. Fire them all and you could easily pay for a few extra flights to Tokyo.
I'll take her
What we have here is a case of meddling versus medaling.
You have standards for the 800m (she met), and I'm guessing she was top 3 from Sweden.
You let her run. Maybe she does what athletes do all the time: run PRs, run better than expected. That's why we race.
Competition means we let people compete and not meddle. Maybe this is a metaphor for how Sweden treats their citizens. I hope not. I'm 1/4 Swede. But I'm glad I'm an American where a Cole Hocker can win the 1500 meter trials, and where every 4 years athletes disprove what the "experts" predicted.
George Smith,
Utter bs. Zero for even trying.
Which Canadians are doping? The percentage of doped athletes is likely the same as the US or GB. Look at all the Americans copping it for missed tests, doping, ABP anomolies.
Saying "sorry" in Canada is not from an inferiority complex. Although from your arrogant perspective, that appears to be what you assume (wrongly).
It's about being polite as well as humble. It's also habit. Everyone says it.
Get your facts straight (or should it be get your false assumptions right).
There's no other way to put it: these quasi-socialist societies (Sweden, Canada) make bad decisions.
The machine must roll on, the individual has no place in these societies. Top down authoritarians that make bad decisions.

Absolute braindead BS. This is not 1980. Look what I wrote earlier in this thread.
As we always said back in the day. "I know you are, but what am I"
Well, perhaps she can parlay her fitness in Brussels and in another couple of meets.....
