no

Technically, at this time, no.
However it's only a matter of time before someone fights that rule in court and then that rule will be gone too.
The NCAA has essentially lost all power to stop student athletes from making money.
The only thing that can prevent a student athlete from earning any form of income will be if that form is illegal.

They could accept prize money under very conditions before. You can google it to see. Basically they can accept money up to the amount to cover expenses. Also it varies by sport.

Agreed. It normally could not be for more than the cost to you to be at the competition. Flight, food, car, etc.
Tennis could get 10k per year I believe.
Odd how a college athlete can now get a sponsorship for their abilities but not prize money for their abilities. How long til races offer sponsorship agreements for winning
Seems like top NCAA runners can take appearance money now. Big road races and track meets offer this.

Technically yes and they could before also
You always could accept prize money. The amount you were allowed to accept was the main issue.
If the prize money is disguised as an appearance fee surrounding their name image likeness. 🤔
The real question is how can we force the athletes to give their appearance fees back to the University?
I mean, you could just say the prize money is an endorsement. With college football players making hundreds of thousands of dollars, I doubt $500 from your local 5k will hit the radar.
Yes, it’s been legal for almost 10 years. If you won a road race on January 1 and earned $10,000 (or any amount), you have until December 31 to spend $10,000 on running related expenses. Keep receipts and you’re good to go. It is no longer specific to the travel and expenses for that one race - that ruled changed around 2012. It is applicable to a full calendar year of expenses in your sport now. Buy a new wardrobe, equipment, memberships, massage, rent for altitude home, etc. all running related.

It's rubbish that with a sport like track and field, where men only have 12.6 scholarships split across an entire track team, people can't accept a little bit of prize money while they don't even have a scholarship. They should at minimum be able to accept the amount of prize money that would get them up to a full scholarship.
they are student-athletes ie not professionals ie they don't get win prizes.
So only professionals can win prize money?

What college football players are making hundreds of thousands of dollars and for what? I never see college athletes in T.V. commercials.

You've been able to accept prize money for races since ~2014, I did it multiple time in college. I'm not going to cite the rule exactly but it was loosely worded as you can accept money for individual performances.
That's how the CRA was able to give out prize money to college athletes.
