This is the first year to have both runners qualify for Olympic Trials/ US Championships. Kids are just getting better at younger ages.

We had a team manager on my high school football team that was really, really, really good. I swear as soon as that timeout finished being called, he was on the field with that gatorade bottle ready to give us some of that sweet, sweet Gatorade.
Best damn Gatorade runner I've ever seen.
Probably so.
I will clarify for the rest of the crowd. Roisin Willis and Hobbs Kessler Named 2020-21 Gatorade National Track and Field Players of the Year.
They really have to lower the bar some years. That Tuohy girl didn't make it to NCAA outdoor and wasn't close to the trials. This Willis girl is fast enough to win an NCAA title at 16 years old. She will go pro out of HS.
Coach Klein:
Gatorade not only quenches your thirst better, it tastes better too.
Bobby Boucher:
No.
Coach Klein:
Gatorade.
Bobby Boucher:

Water sucks. It really, really sucks. Water sucks.

Is your point some years they should not give anyone the award because you don't think anyone is good enough?

No, what he thinks is that if someone is too good then we should know they’ll burn out. They have to ride that fine line of elite high school mediocrity, no records broken, no undefeated season, just some good PRs that allow us to fantasize and decide what WE think their potential is.

And they can never be as good as Backintheday Whoeverson. Everyone knows that Backintheday Whoeverson is the greatest runner we’ve ever had in this damn country and all of these kids today are lucky to have shoes.
No. The literal analogy of lowering the bar come from track and field and the high jump. It fits perfectly here. Let's say at a crappy high school meet, they start at 5' but at the state meet, they start at 6'. In a state meet in the 1600, one year 2nd place may be 4:10 but the next year 1st place is only 4:15. The guy who won in 4:15 got lucky that he competed in an off year but he still wins. In the indoor NCAA meet and XC meet this year, the winners got a bit less credit because many runners chose one competition or the other. The Gatorade runners are the best of the year. The non winners this year had an incredibly difficult year. Two other 800 meter girls made the trials. Most years, that would get them the award. Last year's winner Tuohy, is two years ahead of Willis and wasn't close to making the trials this year. We could probably put Tuohy back in High school this year with her current times and still give the award to Willis.
Willis won't burn out. Her mom was an olympian. She is a future 3:55 1500 runner.
Tuohy won for T&F 3 years ago right, not last year? And set several records that year, right? Last year Ewert won. And she did make it to the trials.
