No. You can still enjoy competing with whomever shows up. If you base your personal value on extrinsic variables, that's a different question.

No - I was asking whether or not you need them to be competitive with other people at similar ability levels. For example, if you have a race between 5 athletes with similar PRs that were achieved under similar circumstances (same shoes, wind, course, etc) where four of them are wearing carbon-plated shoes, the fifth would be at a comparative disadvantage, if only a minor one. Obviously there are other variables determining how each individual performs, but all other things equal, those in the supershoes have the edge. My question with reference to the road racing scene was mainly whether or not enough people have carbon-plated shoes at this point that they're kind of a given, and anyone who shows up to a race in traditional flats is at a disadvantage (like the fifth person above). Sorry if that wasn't clear from the start

Are the super shoes pretty worthless on anything other than dead flat roads? When you weigh in uphills and downhills is the super shoe less effective than a traditional racing flat? Please be expansive in your answer - I'd rather read too much than too little>
Thanks.
When I hear a carbon-plated shoe boinging, it's clear there's some advantage to the person wearing it.
Myself, I'm most interested in the foam allowing me to beat my legs up less.
