Hocker definitely deserves credit and his kick was insane. He is US trials champion, and there are no excuses for the other guys, including Centro. Hocker was simply better.

HOWEVER, he has had a very long season. It’s hard to imagine Centro is in top form yet. Plus, he has shown time and again in the Olympics or WCs, he is always a medal contender. It is hard for me to envision Hocker dethroning him on that stage. I think Centro gets him when it matters…

Hocker has a 3:50 indoor mile. Getting the standard is not going to be a big deal.

I am not sure it is safe to conclude that Centro is done or that Hocker is going to flame out in the rounds. Centro took off too early and gave Hocker the advantage of having time to build his kick all the way around the final turn. Centro had to suddenly switch gears when Hocker came up on his shoulder on the final stretch. That was really the difference. If Centro was a step behind Hocker coming out of the final turn, the result could have gone the other way. Centro miscalculated thinking that Hocker was stuck in traffic or just worn out from the rounds and thought he could front run it in on the last 200.

That’s not how you use dethroned…go back to school. Engels was the 2019 USA CHAMP. centro is still the Olympic champ. Unless lockers beats him there..he’s not dethroned idiot

Centro looked like he had a little bit left while Hocker gave everything he had to win. He got a little lucky with being able to break free that last 100ms. I was worried Hocker would get stuck. He might not be able to do that if he's in a heat where everyone has run 3:33 or faster.

This is the correct take. Why would Centro care if CH beat him into 2nd in the OT? All we know is that these are the only two that will figure in Tokyo. Tough to tell how far either will go in the big dance, but my money is on both to make the final but not medal. Centro 4th, CH 7th.

Centrowitz has been a top US miler/1500m runner for a decade. Making it to Tokyo with a second from the trials doesn't dethrone him...

Holding Centrowitz to a higher standard because he has a contract isn't even remotely a solid argument. I would say it is clear from interviews that neither of those guys actually have beef with the other. Just the heat of competition.

Not how it works. Centro has been dethroned. That doesn't mean that Hocker is the king. There are about 10 other guys who could claim the crown.
