It was also because Chelimo was looking over his right shoulder the whole time. Doing that pulls you to the right a bit.

I'm not sure "we enforce the rules the athletes feel like enforcing" is the stance to take. On the other hand, I'm sure I could think of an overly-harsh DQ where I'd love to adopt the competing athlete's view of "no harm, no foul."
How much more money did Chelimo earn finishing first rather than second?
Lane drift for a gold medal I understand, but in this race he had Tokyo sewn up, and cut off his future team mates. He really didn't need to, I've not seen such a classless move in an OT qualifier before.
He *is* tough as nails though, with a ton of fire and confidence which helps keep him ahead of Grant and Woody.
Some of you sound like those loser old crotchety officials that will DQ a high school runner for a uniform logo being 5% too big.
It’s a race. Not a time trial in a bubble (this applies to Paul’s lame complaints during the race as well).
Is it just me, or does Grant always seem to be placing 2nd in races
Kincaid even finished the 10k in lane 2 in a much less bunched up race. If you don't like it take the lead sooner. Chelimo getting disproportionate hate on here because, well, we all know why. Pretty sure Huddle did the same thing to Rowbury years back & maybe there was a thread or two but not 53 of them. Advocate for more stringent/clear cut rules if you don't like it. Based on the current rules, Chelimo would have a right to be more upset if they took this away.
Maybe some of this has to do with Cooper finishing 4th but he was a clear 4th & could still make the team depending on what the Bowerman bros do. Cooper is also young and will have plenty of opportunities maybe not after a huge season of racing.

There is no way Kincaid and Fisher opt out of one of their races. They will double. They've proven they can do it and I'm pretty sure they've said they would if they made both teams
It's breaking the rules to drift wide and it's breaking the rules to cheat with drugs. Grant probably felt he didn't have much ethical high ground.

I was thinking the same thing? He is obviously a great runner, but when is the last time he won a major race? He always seems to be runner up at big races. Was it Footlockers?
Didn't he win the 5k at NCAAs one year? I'm sure he has won some PAC-10 titles too and the local turkey trot.

And...?
He is always in the mix in these type of races and never seems to have an "off" race, I'd love to have that sort of record myself!
His time will come (barring injuries), he is a superb talent!
it happens all the time on the international circuit. grumbling about it anonymously isn't going to change that. maybe you should be another sport

People can flare out naturally, yes, but it seemed like Chelimo was clearly and deliberately pushing Fisher and Kincaid out to prevent them passing.
And if they filed an appeal, and Chelimo was out, he or others would cry r**ism! Sorry, but it's the truth and that's the world we are living in. 2021 is what it is.

Do you people get a tingly feeling when you accuse everyone of racism?
I think he was acting like a dbag for most of the race, including that move, but I wouldn’t DQ him myself personally. He ultimately won fair and square. Although, the funny thing is the people who told that high schooler he should be DQed are the same people defending Chelimo.
I say no foul because fisher let himself be directed out. If he had just stayed in his lane, Chelimo would have probably gone down. But as others have said, didn't change the outcome really.
Pretty sure if you pull that kind of stunt in a semi to hold onto a qualifying spot, you're going to get DQ'd, or at the very least the runner(s) you were trying to keep from passing you is going to get advanced to the final.
It was clearly interference and if Cooper Teare had been close enough to edge out Kincade for third would that change the opinion of the "no harm, no foul" people? The simpler tactic is just to clothesline the runner attempting to pass and that has the advantage of not opening up the inside to someone else.

Pretty sure you’re not.
Agreed. Think of the NBA how many times end of game’s especially big ones are fouls not called. Let us be honest even if passed Chelimo beats Teare. USATF wants to send best three to Olympics and that is Kincaid, Fisher, and Chelimo. Athletes also tend to not want to whine. If this meant an Olympic Medal BTC would likely complain. Teare’s coach looks bush league if they complain since he was not impeded and still would lose.
I'm with you 100%.
Prefontaine employed the same tactic against Hailu Ebba in the 1972 Oregon / Oregon State dual meet. Ebba had superior speed but Pre moved him outside on the homestretch and Ebba didn't know what was happening. Pre won.
