How about Fisher drops the 10, giving True a spot and Kincaid drops the 5 and giving Teare a spot.
Yeah, let's try to turn it into a NiceFest 2021. Everybody who makes the Olympic team in more than one event should voluntarily give up one of their spots so that the really nice, courageous 4th-place finisher can go too!
That's B.S.! If Fisher or Kincaid decide for themselves that they'd be better off focusing on just one event, so be it, but they are under absolutely no obligation to do so. They earned their places fair and square in the 5K as well as the 10K (and let's not get into "but, Burrito Track Club" since nobody really has any idea who, if anyone, in the field is doping, and who isn't)
A spot on the Olympic team is a huge accomplishment, and not something to just casually given away. Plus, any runner that gets "gifted" a spot on the Olympic team will always have a slight stigma because of that. They weren't a "true" Olympian. Nothing against Cooper Teare, but he was 4th, not top 3, and didn't earn a spot on the Team.
Getting 4th sucks, but it's also true that having the difference between getting 3rd and 4th be such a high-stakes matter helps make the Olympic Trials format so compelling.
And finally, these guys need to make a living. I doubt they are getting hugely rich off running. I would assume there is a financial incentive for them to actually run 2 events at the Olympics, as well as ranking points to be earned.
