There is a half on Sunday that I am considering running.
Sunday is also my birthday and I’m getting a new pair of Saucony Endorphin Pro’s. Is it cool to take a pair out of the box and run 13 miles?

What have you been training in?

Mostly Saucony Ride’s.
Bump
Nope, racing in brand new shoes usually is bad idea, but you can try

A poster in one of the Boston or the Luke Humphrey Facebook groups that I follow ran several shorter, say 5 miles, training runs in the Endorphin Pro's without a problem but in her marathon race she found that they made the top of her feet very sore. The problem with some super shoes like the Nikes is that many report the shoes loose their pop after 100 to 150 miles. So going out in several long runs in them before a race uses a significant portion of their best life. Sure, some wear the Nike super shoes for 400 or more miles but most of those miles are after they replace them with a new pair for racing and use the higher mileage pair only for training.
Luckily many report 300 to maybe 500 miles out of the Endorphin Pros. Note the original Pros are on clearance for $149.99 so some colorways in some sizes may be disappearing from some sellers. Waiting to buy just limits the availability of the older model. Only the upper changes in the Pro 2.
I probably wouldn’t wear the pros out of the box for a HM. It’s a bit less unanimously awesome than the VF. I would at least get a shakeout and some strides in them.
You can run even a marathon by wearing basketball shoes. Here's a list of basketball shoes that are perfect for running and a list of shoes that will help you jump higher

People used to run marathons in Chuck Taylors. This won't be worse than that.
Can you?: Yes.
Is it cool?: No one will know that your shoes are brand new and a lot of other people will have supershoes at the starting line, so it won't be cool or uncool.
One part of breaking in a new shoe is that it will stretch out a tad which could require a tightening of the laces to fit optimally(which you dont have time to do in a race). Specifically the upper will get broken in where it bends/stretches near the metatarsals, as well as where it connects to the midsole. Also, the insole takes its first beating in the heal & forefoot of which are made of a variety of materials & quality.
The other part of break-in is breaking in your Body to the new shoe. A shoe that differs in design/geometry then you are used to will work your body (i find most specifically in the lower leg & feet) in a different way. Even if this difference is slight its cumulative effect throughout a race could result in an overuse injury. No-one likes to end a race with a foot tendon injury that may sideline them for several weeks.
So what you do to condition your body to the new shoes is utilize them in a few workouts spaced out weeks prior to the race to make sure that your body agrees with the shoe. If you end up with plantar fasciitis or a shinsplint then maybe pass on em for the race and go with another existing pair that gives you more confidence. If they feel great in & after the workouts then Game On.
Sure, if you are familiar with a shoe and comfortable with racing in em then just open the box day-of, go for a warmup jog with a couple strides, then un-tie / re-tie them and your good to go.
No.
Not a good idea.

I would wear them just to show the person gifting them to you that you are thankful.
Biggest concern with new shoes is blistering. You can recover from that quickly if it happens in your half.
Those shoes will only take you 13 miles. You’ll either have to take them off and walk barefoot or swap shoes for the last .1 miles.
5 days ago? You’ve had over a week to run in them. I love the speeds!
