You'll probably find they can handle it for a long time as the ones for it are generally retired people scared of their own shadows, white collar and other people who can work from home on full pay and those who have doomscrolled their way into being petrified of covid and believe vaccination provides full protection from catching and transmitting the coof (despite the continually mounting evidence to the contrary, this is an alarmingly high number).
As for those who are unable to work, have kids doing home based learning and mounting bills, as the old saying goes, sucks to be you.
I pretty much agree with this.
In my experience in the US at least it was the individuals no longer in the work force or those who could work from home that most favored lockdowns. There was also a very political component of it (and there still is) where liberals want to pile on restrictions indefinitely and conservatives wanted next to no Covid restrictions.
As far as Australia goes I’m not really sure what their game plan is. I keep hearing their goal is to essentially eliminate community transmission of COVID but I just don’t see how that is practically feasible.
To really eliminate community transmission you would need to -
1) lockdown hard every few months after a minimal number of COVID cases inevitably rear their ugly head
2) highly restrict foreigners coming into your country and then strictly monitor Australians returning to Australia (I’m talking solitary confinement under armed guard)
3) vaccinate your entire population-forcefully if necessary
And even then there’s no guarantee that COVID won’t spread among a completely vaccinated public. In fact, it’s been shown the COVID can spread among vaccinated individuals- it’s just rarer and symptoms more minor.
This is before even considering the inevitability of other more contagious & more resistant COVID strains popping up.
In short- Australia will have to become a less free, more closed off & more governmentally heavy handed society to accomplish its current Covid goals and will have to do it over a period of years. I’m not going to go as far as say it’s going to be like North Korea but I do think their society will need to be similar to China or, if you are historically inclined, 1980s USSR.
