As someone else said, if you knee hits it, the weight of the barrier is enough to hurt for a long time and quite intensely. She's not imagining that. Her alertness and adrenaline are to the max.
To your analogy, a baseball batter may argue balls and strikes because of angle, perspective, inconsistency of umps, but if he says he got hit by the pitch, he's either lying or he got plunked. Similarly, whether or not her toe hits an immovable barrier, it's something she knows for a fact.
