Nobody lost a opportunity to race in the trials by Elise Cranny not starting. The status of entries on the USA track and field page will list all the athletes who qualified and declared. Its also a great resource on who was eligible to compete and who scratched.
Are some of you new to the sport?
It is her spot to use as she choses.
From USATF trials qualification guidelines:
"All verified entries who have met the standard within the prescribed period and at a bona fide meet (see guidelines below), shall be qualified to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Additional verified entries from the rank order list of those who have entered and declared shall be invited to participate in the Trials only to the extent that the indicated field size has not been filled by those with the standard. An invitation will be extended to these additional persons based on verified entries in their performance rank order."
In the women's 1500 only 15 of the 30 runners actually met the 4:06.00 standard. The rest were accepted entries to fill the field. By scratching late, Cranny wasted a spot on the start line which otherwise would have gone to another runner, for who running at the trials would have been an amazing experience and opportunity even if there was no realistic chance of making the olympic team.

Too bad some scrub who didn't qualify didn't get a participation award. Cranny qualified. Tell one of the other slow pokes who competed and got eliminated that they should not have participated so that your favorite girl could have.

Agreed. Cranny is not the first one and would not be the last one who does that. She has earned the spot and can do whatever she wants.
This is a meet to choose the Olympic team, not a participation meet. Run faster or get over it.

Would you say the same if you were the next one on the list?
There's a reason NCAA and nearly every other league has an Honest Effort rule. Super-elite athletes should not have more privileges than anyone else. Make them pick which events they want and let someone else have an opportunity.
You’re a moron who doesn’t understand how qualification for the Olympic Trials works. Anyone who hits the Trials standard gets to compete; anyone who doesn’t cannot. Cranny didn’t take anyone’s spot away. Think before you post.

I argue that the trials is so much more. Really it is a sort of All-American meet for the best American athletes to compete. If all they wanted to do was select an Olympic team, why let in anyone who doesn't have the standard? Why even have a meet at all? It's very expensive and a committee could simply select the top three from performance lists and achieve nearly the same exact result.

Completely incorrect. See my previous post.

She declared then didn’t run even though it’s the first race of the meet for her. Someone else would have been able to run if she hadn’t declared.
Much harder to root for her now.
Oh no you poor thing
I mean, OP has a point. The Trials fields should get filled so other people get their shot or just get some experience.

+1 - totally agree.
Elle Purrier and Jenny Simpson did the same thing in the 5k and I dont see anyone complaining about them.

How about Kellyn Taylor running the 5k prelim as a “tuneup” for the 10k?
Wut?

Nope. That was my way of pointing out the obvious. I was actually in the OT.
Patiently awaiting the thread slamming Elle Purrier for doing the same thing.
This is the definition of a nothing burger.
People really losing sleep over this?
