Hi, I’m new to the forum, but looking for insight from experience high school TF folks. I’m just wondering if my son’s track coaches Varsity Letter standards are typical. They must earn 12 points in the season, 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a Duel meets earns 5 -3- 1 points and they get the points earned for other multi-school meets (Conference, Regional or States).
My son is a sophomore, but ran varsity sprints, relays and did varsity long jump for every meet, including conferences and regionals. There were 13 meets (including one indoor, conferences, regional and states) While he did not place a lot (he probably earned 10.5 points in the season.) He is the second ranked on the team for two of his events and 4th for one and runs on the only varsity sprint relays. The team is not big, just over 20 athletes, although it is a very large school - but apparently some of the top runners from two years ago (covid shut down 2020) did not return either due to graduations, covid concerns or others sports. So my son was an integral part of the varsity line up, as were several other players who also did not letter.
My son showed up for every practice, even when he had to ride his bike there and often stayed late to practice long jump. He faced the anxiety of competing at conferences and regionals because the coach asked him to, even though he knew he would not be that competitive.
After the banquet, where he found out that he wasn’t getting a letter ( there no accurate access to a tally of points and when he asked a bit before the coach he asked said he didn’t know the letter requirements) he said he thinks he won’t be able to get a letter in TF - which is sad because he was very excited about that goal. It was sorta the highlight of a sucky year.
Sorry to go on. But I’m wondering if this is typical? If not should I communicate my concerns to the coach or would I just be being “that parent”. Any tips on what I could say to my son to keep this from discouraging him?
Thanks in advance for any help!
