Can't speak for every school, but some do for sure, I would wager most do.
There's no rule against it; it depends on how much money the school has and whether it's a student with more eligibility. If it's a senior they will never see again, then they are probably on their own. However, it's so hard to make the Olympic trials, most schools are going to pay for it if they want to recruit top athletes. The only people who can't contribute are school boosters, agents and professional sports organizations.
Yeah, I would think most (all) do. They certainly did when I was in school and we were not well funded.
It's not really that big of a cost in the whole scheme of things and it's quite an honor to have someone competing in the school uniform.
USATF used to pay for all the athletes.
Yes they do. They are not obligated, but most universities cover the athletes travel expenses. It is good recruiting and exposure.
