In the end, that was a great final.
But I am sure Djokovic having a harder path to final took something out of him.
Tsitsipas was fun to watch, though.
Maybe he’s the future.

Djokovic's path, including the Nadal match, took nothing out of him. After being 2 sets down he won the last 3 sets against a 22 year old - probably the best player in the tournament - who was worn down by the Serb, just as Djokovic came back from 2 sets to love down against 19 year old Italian who couldn't finish the match because the 34 year old exhausted him. Doping in plain sight. Just like all professional sport.

Last year Rafa destroyed Djokovic because Rafa was doping. Did Djokovic dope last year? Did Rafa dope this year? Is Tsisipas doping yet?

Nadal and Djokovic have doped for years. They have built their careers on it. That also shows in how, in their mid-30's, they physically outlast everyone, including those players over 10 years younger. They never fatigue. Djokovic had a real problem lasting in matches till 2011, when he went "gluten-free". If Tsitsipas is doping he isn't doing it very well because he ran out of gas against a player 12 years older than him.

OP makes a fair point. You would think after a few decades ATP would realize that certain players excel on certain surfaces and have the seeds adjusted accordingly. The logic behind using rankings is that it keeps players from phoning it in at a tournament because they want to keep up their rankings. But then R. Fed shows up to the French Open and phones it in by walking after a few matches.
That is one reason he will never be the GOAT to me. Imagine someone using the french open as practice for wimbledon. You figure he would have lied a little so the organizers and others could save face more. He's just so used to everyone kissing his tail his whole career why even bother.
that definitely perturbed me wrote:

A 39 year old coming off 2 knee surgeries has to bust himself on Nadal's favorite surface to prove his credentials? (which include 20 slams - and not almost all on one surface, like the Spaniard).
Federer has never retired from a match in his 23 year career, unlike Djokovic, who had retired from 7 before he went "gluten-free" in 2011 (he had become known as 'the quitter') and Nadal, who bailed in a slam qf at two sets to love down against Murray. The Spaniard has repeatedly taken lengthy "sabbaticals" from the tour with his supposed "injuries" only to come back stronger than ever. Juiced to the gills. Federer is the last top player in this generation whose game doesn't cry out - "doper!"
