There was a close up of the first 3's faces as they finished the race, which for me stated everything necessary: - there was not a trace of distress or tiredness on the faces of the first 2, who were pulling away from Muir with every stride. They were hardly breathing in a 3:53 1500m, and were full of energy after. Muir, on the other hand, was straining and grimacing with every stride in the last 50m, looked completely out of breath as she finished, and proceeded to sink to her knees in tiredness.
The contrast was stark. The reason for it was obvious. It is a shame the upcoming Olympics are going to be producing champions left, right and centre, who have clearly benefitted from lack of testing the past 6 months due to Covid. If I were Muir, I wouldn't bother.
If you had followed this women's event for the past five years, the only time Muir ever beat Hassan was when Hassan employed bad strategy which used to plague her until 2019. The first time I noticed Hassan was around 2015 because of her strange arm movement (I thought they were broken sometime in her early life) so I looked her up and began following her. She had terrible running strategy; either getting trapped in the crowd at the bottom of the race or taking off too early. To compound it, she didn't have a kick at the end and at the start she always ran in the back. I remember her losing a 5k to Obiri and Ayana after losing track of the lead two while lagging in the crowd. She almost repeated the same in the 10K in Doha by letting Gidey runaway too far ahead. Fortunately, she was able to reel her in. What I noticed about Hassan was her ability to run that final 800m at a high speed, regardless of the length of the race. I figured if she ran from the front at a high speed, the kick of the others won't matter at the bottom of the race. This she did in the 1500m at Doha and ran them into the ground. I lost respect for Muir when she implied in an interview that Hassan was on drugs because her ex-coach Salazar was accused of it Hassan has been performing long before Salazar was her coach. Check her history. This woman worked her butt off to get where she is today and it's scandalous the way people trying to smear her name because their favorite athlete can't measure up. Muir is not in Hassan's league simply because she cannot maintain that high speed Hassan does. Kipyegon's best two PB's were both second places behind Hassan. Muir is in Tsegay's league and that woman has bested her too many times on the big stage. With this current crop of runners Muir is not going to medal in this event if Hassan, Kipyegon, Dibaba or Tsegay are in it. And Stafford from Canada is getting stronger.
