At the moment I am training in a way very few coaches would recommend but it seems to work very well
Some background: 20 years ago I was able to run a 35 min. 10k and a 1:18 half marathon. But then I stopped running for a long time and when I restarted, these times were gone.
The last years I was struggling to run 5k under 25 minutes. My marathon pace was about 5:40
2 months ago I started with a different approach:
- I run everyday, minimum distance 2k, longest distance 6k, occasionally 10K
- I run all my runs at a relatively high intensity but I limit the amount of kms per week to 35 or less
- Especially on the 2k runs I run a pace way above my 5k race pace
- Once a week I do a 2 hour bike ride.
The result of this is that my base tempo is much much higher than it was.
My average tempo is about the 5k race pace I had before.
I did not test it yet But I am pretty sure my 5k pace will be 2 minutes faster than it was
And strangely enough, also my 10k improved.
Most trainers will tell me that I should do long runs more and build on an aerobic base. but this seems to be working quite well.
My question: are there running coaches, books or philosophies who promote this kind of training?
Would love to know why this works and if it could work for others too
