As others have said, the biggest factors in ten under the MR are likely a) Kiptoo’s front running and b) good weather. The shoes undoubtedly helped as well.
The shoes are definitely the fastest shoes yet. I take issue with people viewing the new shoe tech as “cheating” or “unfair” or dismissing new fast times as a “joke.” It really is analogous to Emil Zátopek calling Ron Clarke’s WRs “clown world” because they were run on superior track surfaces.
Yes, if runners of the past had worn these shoes, they’d have run a bit faster. That doesn’t make the shoes ethically wrong! As long as everybody has access to the same new footwear for big competitions (which has recently been made a rule) and they’re not installing motors in the sneakers, it seems like fair play, a little thing called “progress.”
So at some point, I hope to see this talk about the new footwear subside just a bit—though naturally it will live on eternally on these boards, just as many people still say Jim Ryun ran 3:33 with, you know, a 34 second final 300, ON CINDERS!!!
A lot of guys showed up very fit and ready to run tonight, congrats to them.
I'm saying if what you wrote is true, then he probably would have won if he'd had the super spikes.
We're not saying it's impossible to run fast in normal spikes. We're just saying it's a hell of a lot easier to do so in super spikes.
Rodger Kram - one of the top guys in the world that studies this posted the following earlier tonight in another thread:
Rojo write this up as a peer-reviewed scientific article & submit ASAP, the world needs to know. It'll go great trust me.
LOL!!! What a joke super spikes are. Who cares anymore - biggest circus in town…sheesh!
Those springy spikes work well in perfect conditions ... BUT .... I wonder how they would respond on the day that Nyambui ran that 28:01 in a sauna? I'm thinking Bataan Death March

Will you now at least admit what the shoe execs themselves admit - the new spikes work very damn well.
They'll never admit it. They want to believe that their PRs are purely the result of hard work. It's like wealthy people always like to think they got their money through hard work rather than with big helpings of dumb luck, like being born into rich family. Everyone wants to be the hero of their own story and no one wants to have to say, yeah, I broke 28 minutes but my news helped a lot
Nur wore the new adidas spikes. All Adidas schools had them.

Nur ran in ordinary Adidas spikes not even their new “super spikes” and got 3rd? What’s next are you going to say its EPO?
It looks like Nur ran in adizero avanti spikes which have a pebax plate and foam. I’ll admit that I’m not as familiar with the non-nike brands of super spikes but doing a quick lookup of the shoe it sounds very similar to the dragonfly.
Look, that record has been around since ‘79 and, in one night, 10 guys break it? Something is up and it isn’t their training.
dever ran in dragonfly’s. tulsa is an adidas school

Of course - he’s not giving up 30 seconds. Looks like he ran 28:28 on the same track in April of this year. Be interesting to see what shoes he was wearing in that race. In 2 months he pr’d 47 seconds!

Yep, from his Instagram looks like he was in adidas up through at least May so I’d bet his 28:28 were in adidas. 47 second instant pr just by switching shoes. Wow! Looks like I need to take more time off my 15 year old 10k pr. I’m getting close to that 28 minute mark.
If i read your post with the name blacked out i would think is from a 10 year old....
Please stop saying those are "super spikes". It's just a foam Rojo

Yeah cause the only change this year was the spikes.. I'm a college athlete, I few of the guys racing at nattys personally, I know what they've been up to for training. The spikes obviously shave off a second or two but you're an idiot if you think it's the reason records are being broken and it's honestly incredibly disrespectful to the athletes who've been working their asses off all year for this opportunity to race.
Yeah, because since 1979 nobody ever trained their assess off until this year. Not sure who's the one being disrespectful here.

+1
Kids these days are obviously tougher than in the past and clearly more talented. That’s the reason times are so much faster now. There is no way a multi-billion dollar company could come up with a shoe to make you faster.
I bought my daughter a pair of Dragonflys and they did not seem so different than her old spikes. I totally see that the Next%, Alphfly, etc give an advantage over traditional road racing shoes. What about the Dragonflys are so advantageous over other spikes. The foam?
If the spikes don’t really help then why is literally everyone in that race wearing them.
Kiptoo rabbiting the race out in 27:30 pace for 18 laps had a far bigger impact than the spikes. Obviously the spikes played a big role as well, but given the lower stack height and the fact that people like Shelby have ripped records in old Mambas/Victory shoes makes me cautious to chalk it all up to shoes. Was Houlihan in 14:10 shape when she ran her AR had she worn the shoes? I sure doubt it.
It’s like Canova always said — it’s mostly about pacing.
These guys are amazing runners
These guys have worked really hard
These guys now have shoes that knock 15-20 seconds off a 10k
All of this can be true
