Should not have been a DQ.
It was actually a pretty nifty move.

It’s pretty similar to how Nuguse passed Kiprotich at the very end on the inside for a national title.
As a BYU homer, I have to admit I don't see anything remotely worthy of DQ. I watched it live and was sure Franco let this one slip away.
However this is excellent "in-meet management" by Eyestone. He protested and it worked. The officials obviously saw something. Blame the officials not Eyestone. He's capitalizing on a stupid rule.
Franco should be DQ'd just for being high school class of 2013! Yes, 2013! This "college kid" is, what, 26 or possibly even 27 years old if he finished high school at 19? How do you BYU homers even look in the mirror? How does Eyestone even pretend to have an ounce of integrity?

He probably nearly swallowed his dentures when that whippersnapper from Oregon went flying by.

Yeah but Kiprotich is running on the outside line of lane one giving Nuguse room. I don't think there was any room last night. I'd still like to see a head on video.

Sorry Reed's mother: Eyestone didn't cheat. Talem Franco didn't cheat. The situation sucks. But your baby is out.
Rule 7
Track Events
SECTION 5. Running Violations
Not in Lanes
ARTICLE 3. The referee, after consulting with the appropriate officials, shall disqualify a competitor who:
a. Jostles, cuts across or obstructs another competitor so as to flagrantly impede the other runner’s progress (direct contact is not necessary - any action that causes another runner to break stride or lose momentum is grounds for disqualification);
b. Cuts in front of another runner without proper clearance or one full stride on the curved line start;
c. Veers to the right or to the left so as to flagrantly impede a challenging runner or forces the challenging runner to run a greater distance;
d. Voluntarily leaves the track/course or clearly abandons the race, then returns to continue the race;
e. Tries to force a way between two leading runners and makes direct contact so as to impede the progress of either;
f. Gains a meaningful advantage by failing to complete the prescribed course that is defined by a legal marking system; or
g. Steps on or over the curb with two consecutive steps of either both feet or a single foot.
They disqualified him according to 3a but I personally think 3e is more appropriate. He didn't force his way between two leading runners but he did make direct contact with a leading runner as he was passing and it may have slightly impeded him. From the video I would have said no but after seeing that photo I can see how they may have DQed him.

Screenshot here. Definitely looks like a bit of contact but still disagree with the DQ.

obvious dq, imo. Sorry Reed. Respect your elders in the race.
Didn't look like a foul.
@byutrackfieldxc has an instagram post that shows the end of the race looking back from the finish line. Franco might have been nudged a little to the side by Brown, but tough to see.
The contact (if there is anything significant, and I don't see it) is at the line from behind. The BYU guy's shoulders are square at the line and I don't see his stride ever get chopped. How do you impede someone when you lean around them from behind right at the line? It looks like there was a little contact, but what is anyone seeing that shows Brown impeded the BYU guy?

Do officials have access to any other camera angles or photos? The TV feed we have really doesn’t show it very well.
By its terms, 3(e) doesn't apply. And unlike 3(e), 3(a) requires that the competitor "flagrantly" impede another runner's progress. Although I think that he demonstrated flagrantly bad manners to gain an advantage, it's not clear to me that he flagrantly impeded the other runner's progress to the finish line. Perhaps 3(b) could be applied, since he arguably did "cut in front" of the other runner without "proper clearance." Anyway, tough call.
The only video/photo evidence allowed is that which is declared "official" prior to the meet. A couple years ago a HS relay team broke the state record in the 4x100 and was disqualified. A photo surfaced that clearly showed there was no violation but it was not allowed to be used.
Stuff like this just solidifies my hatred for BYU. Weird religious cult, overage cheaters, calls for bogus DQs.... where does it end??
If we're DQ'ing the Oregon guy for minimal contact, then the Stanford girl should be DQ'ed in tonight's 1500. She nudged her teammate to get through on the inside and qualified as a result.
I wouldn't call either, but if yesterday was a DQ- this one was "worse"

You can dislike BYU without bringing their religion into it. It makes you look like a bigot.
