Before the shoes and PEDs, 4:10 and sub 9 were impressive times for a 17 or 18 year old. Now, those times are garbage for a high schooler.

I’m sure your post is tongue in cheek but there is some truth in it. I graduated highschool back in 2006 when a 410 or a sub 9 would be eye popping and get you on the front page or Dyestat.
Now, in a world where highschool kids break four every year, and seemingly every single state has at least one kid going sub 410 or sub 9 those times are good but not head turning like they were 15 years ago.
No way. Tuohy never came close even though she is the GOAT.
What you stated is not true if a young lad also is a sub-1:52 800m guy.
They're only impressive for 9-10 now.
Wow…crazier than Brosnan’s “4:20 is just not fast for a high school mile” quote.

He’s 100% correct, it’s not fast!
We’re to the point now for 1600m recruits:
A Level- 3:XX-4:05
B Level 4:05-4:10
C Level 4:10-4:19
Take that 4:20 to d3 or community college.

There is no period in which PEDs were not a factor, just different PEDs.
Are PED’s really that rampant in high school running? I would wager not.
I was looking at performance lists a few days ago.
To really be considered a top high school distance guy these days you need to go at least 1:52.5/4:07/8:49.

Most athletes who use PEDs are in high school.

People are getting more scientific about finding talent and cultivating it is my guess.
Your thread title is garbage

I can count on one hand how many kids from my state have done that all-time. Those are excellent times and will almost certainly get a partial scholarship.
The OP said 17/18 year olds because he is talking about seniors. Obviously 16/17s doing it would be more impressive. A senior running those times is probably too late to earn any scholarship.
Disagree. These times are not "garbage". The potential for these HS atheletes to run "exploded" PRs their FR year of college is statically higher (if they are not red shirted). Many are diamonds in the rough and % improvements are greater than those with already "professional" quality PRs. How many of us through our experience and paying close attention to HS runners year over year vastly improve their 1st year of college? Please keep in mind, HS is a staging ground for college and these HS PRs are launch pads to potentially great times. But I will throw this in the mix. More HS runners are running with clubs and not being grinded to ground as well as coaching techniques have improved vastly at the HS level (meaning coaches are "paid" professional coaches). And yes, PEDs do help (lol).

More kids outside of sports use PEDs than inside sports. But then there are more non-athletes so...

All any of us can comment on is direct evidence from our high school & college teams, rumors about athletes on our teams and rumors about athletes in our athletic conference. Athletes whom are or were heavy boozers and weed smokers, some admitted to using amphetamines.

Oh it's absolutely a scourge in high school. Everywhere I look at the big meets I went to in hs, kids would be puffing on inhalers like they were mint-flavored Juul pods. It's disgusting how corrupt our sport has become.
IMO, what we are seeing is a result of the Internet. Better HS coaching techniques are being developed, shared, and seen online. HS kids see times on Milesplit and come to believe they can do it and find the coaching they need to get there. National online rankings have also led more kids to chase big fast meets where they can land the PRs they want.
The PED comment as it relates to HS running seems misplaced. Maybe some FB players turned sprinters and throwers here and there since it seems to be more an established problem in HS football.
