3:31.55 makes him the 91st fastest man in history. My question is, how many of the 90 guys ahead of him weighed as much or more than he does? My guess would be one, Andrew Wheating at #59 (3:30.90). I think Kerr can beat that mark later this year.
Would also be interesting to know how many ahead of him were busted for doping.
Interesting that they were named "Beasts" before Kerr showed up
Scotland due to its geography will have far fewer facilities than even England. Not that many high quality tracks, for example. So all-out sprinters (60m, 100m, etc) are not likely to be many. Other sports do eat up the resources, and therefore the attention of athletes.
However, add to this that if an athlete is particularly good at football etc, where the short repeated sprints etc make good speed base for distances circa 800m and up, further aerobic training can be added easily - or at least, with hard work but not a complicated methodology.
So in Scotland for example, someone who has good speed from other sports can still go out and run and build a solid aerobic base, even if there are no facilities. Playing team sports as a youth and hitting the roads & hills for big mileage can still work - and if progress is early, then the resources come, perhaps with a move to university in Loughborough/Birmingham/south of England. Hence why the good Scottish runners (McColgan, Hawkins, Kerr, Muir, Reekie etc) are all 800m and up, and why in the mid-long distances they have very little disadvantage to the Londoners.
A few good triathletes too (Beth Potter and others less well-known), which is a different route but again a legitimate one.
