No, Aouita was training for the 5000/10000 when he ran the fastest time of the year for 10000. He'd heard that Coe, Cram, and Ovett were moving up to the 5000m, so was planning to move up himself to the 10000m in Seoul.
Similarly, when he ran his fast 800m times in 1983 and 1988, he didn't run a single 5000m race in either of those years.
Compare with Steve Ovett who beat peak Henry Rono over two miles just several weeks after running 1:44 flat (after a suicidal first lap) losing to doper Beyer in the Europeans).
