A good runner
A good runner
I did not think she went out too fast either. Her early splits were well within the range of her earlier races. Just a bad day. Hardly unique. Overall a very promising freshman season.
its a mistake if it doesnt go as planned? just accept the fact that she had a bad day in the worst time possible
Oh engineering student. I didnt know
Mary Keitany had a bad day at the 2017 NYC marathon when she lost to Flanagan.
Gianna Quarzo... freshman. .. pr'd in 10 k... finished 13th... just missed... guys the discussion about Katelyn Tuohy is getting silly. Obviously the race was out of her legs. You can't just keep running faster otherwise everyone would just improve every race. She hit the wall for the season and will regroup for next year. Lots of other girls were way slower than their personal records
True. Forget times and just look at place. She is out of the top 24 now.
Quarzo family repeats as PIAA Class AA 3200 champs. JoJo Quarzo won the Pennsylvania Class AA 3200m on Friday in 10:30.93. Gianna Quarzo won this event when it was last run in 2019. JoJo, a sophomore, is 5 seconds off Gianna's Class AA state record time of 10:25.91.
Nico Young had a bad day yesterday too
Why mention an unrelated runner who had a bad performance? When Tuohy has a good day and anyone dares to mention another good runner, it is taken as an insult to Tuohy. So now you have to build her up by calling out other runners who had a bad day? That is the low road.
both top hs runners and both top freshmen in xc were not able to get to the outdoor nationals
only mentioned young because hes the same with tuohy, they are both high school standouts, people expected them to qualify because they have been having great outdoor season
Athing Mu has outperformed expectations. Many other freshmen made it to nationals.
Mu has no competition in middle distance running, not the case in distance
Well yeah, theres a lot of freshmen who qualified, but then they are sophomores
In the women's 1500 and 5000? Distance running and sprinting are not really comparable. Historically how many freshman have won in either event?
Tuohy on a good day was capable of qualifying in the 1500 and 5000, particularly with the scratches in the 1500m. But it is not like she was a serious candidate to AA in either event. She was 7th in the 1500m at the ACCs and is not yet able to run in the 4:11 and below range . And there are a number of runners with faster times in the 5000m. So not sure exactly what the expectations were or what she underperformed. No one was saying she was going to AA. She had a very good season coming off surgery and dealing with the adjustment to college running, and showed excellent progress and pr'ed again. Being healthy and pr'ing is an excellent sign for the future. Now she just needs to build on it.
And yes, other heralded athletes had tough days also. It is part of the adjustment.
Congrats on your OQ run in Portland!
For most of us, the purpose of the regional meet is to qualify for nationals, not to run prs. The prs usually come from borderline qualifiers and the ones who just miss, as these have to bust their butt just to have a chance.
The NC State stars, with exception of Tuohy and Clairmonte, all qualified for Eugene, which is the main goal.
Cuarzo is another true freshman from the famed 2020 recruiting class. She ran well in xc and track, finishing 13th in the east 10k, missing nationals by just 1 spot, well above her seeding.
If you are looking at prs as a sign for favorites, then Tynnismaa, Heymach, and Meyer may be ones to watch at nationals.
One last Tuohy thought is that she will obviously find a balance between tactics, and her personal front running style. She is an engineering student, and a student of running, so will understand and figure this out with the coaches. Tynnismaa actually executed the perfect Tuohy style race just running away at the front to win that heat anyway and the ultimate qualifying time of 4:16 was well within Tuohy's range.
Looking at tuohy, she's not in her full running form yet, but is running pretty good times, kid still has potential and bright future ahead of her
We all have the bonk days, unlucky for her it happened at a qualifying meet
Also, good luck with the engineering studies
Coach Laurie Henes comments on Katelyn Tuohy (April 2021)
- about her struggles, the pressure and reason why she picked nc state
You are right. She didn't underperform to expectations. I didn't expect her to qualify but I assumed that you did. Sounds like I was wrong though.
She showed throughout the season that she was capable of running these distances fast enough to qualify. But you are going to have off days, especially as a freshman. Qualifying would have been a nice experience, but it is not as if she was running times this season that made her a serious contender, so not qualifying was not any kind of upset either.
